Anyone watching this miniseries? So far it a fascinating examination of a supposed crime. I say supposed because at the moment I really don't know if the protagonist (portrayed by Colin Firth) did murder his wife or not. After we finish this fictionised account, we are going over to Netflix to see the 13 part French documentary on the same case that was made during the trial.
Colin Firt is mesmerizing in the lead role!

I watched one episode. Then I went to read about the real story of which I have no idea. I don't know if I'll continue watching. I'm tired of real life adaptations series, at least the crime type series. There are too many.
Tell me, when you finish watching, how it ends. Is there a (proposed) solution for the case or it is left opened?

I am really liking this one in particular, but I also really like this type of drama (adaptations from true life crime dramas). So no problem with reporting back to you about the outcome. I think it is supposed to end in June sometime.

I think we have a thread here about the documentaries, am I wrong? And I say “documentaries” because they actually shot a few movies/episodes during different time periods (like Boyhood!). I hope this is not a “spoiler”! The documentaries are very interesting and fascinating It’s impossible to say if he did it or not, tho.! And there is a conflict of interest that it seems it would be mentioned in the miniseries. See Juliette Binoche’s mysterious character! Also there is indeed a moral issue with not just doing fictional versions of these real life stories but probably even with the non-fictional stuff but it seems both productions are very well made. Firth is indeed mesmerizing! He seems vulnerable and desperate but at the same time seductive and dangerous! Just great! I remember originally it was announced that Harrison Ford would play the role! That would had been a huge risk for him! Imagine Ford playing a bisexual man suspect of murdering his wife! But at the end, the role went to the talented and trustworthy British actor who isn’t afraid of playing morally and sexually ambiguous characters.

I'll save your post for after we are done the series, Sgev.
I really don't want to spoil the outcome. I sort of remember the case, but only in the sense that I know there was a fellow accused of killing his wife and it involved a staircase. And that's all I remember because once when I was clicking the remote endlessly I came upon one of these "true life crime" shows and they were reviewing the case. But I don't remember anything about the particulars.
So this is a true mystery to me and I think the enigmatic nature of CF's character (as you say he's a conundrum of traits, both smooth and manipulative and anxious and vulnerable) is perfect for the mystery of the story.

Also it seems there is now a public fight between the director of the series and the documentary filmmakers. I found fascinating that they included them in the plot and wondered where it will go. Again , there was a conflict of interest that wasn’t mentioned in the documentary but it seems the series is very interested on it and according to the producers of the documentary, it’s exaggerated.

I finished it and it’s very interesting. Probably, much more complex than the documentary even if this time it’s fiction! I mean, it’s very obvious that the documentarians were more sympathetic to Michael. That’s part of the polemic around the series, No spoilers except that the fictional version considers all the conflicted versions of his wife’s death (I still think it could be seen like something slightly offensive to the victim because they repeat the death multiple time and it’s always gory and explicit).
Colin Firth is great like a seductive but provably dangerous (or not!) grandpa! I hope he receives some awards love in the USA. It’s also amazing to think that his co-stars are people like Toni Colette and Juliette Binoche! That’s a hell of a cast! I really liked Parker Posey like the at the beginning cynic prosecutor who falls from grace. Again, probably some spoilers here although this isn’t actually mentioned in the series only suggested but I remember the documentary explicitly said what happened to her and I was waiting to see Posey playing it but that wasn’t central to the plot. Anyway, with her final scene you just can’t avoid to feel for her and imagine her tragic end.

It was a great series. IBoth of us really enjoyed it. The cast was superb.
I always enjoy watching Colin Firth but sometimes I just can't believe he isn't more celebrated for his consistency of really fine performances.
I liked how you really had to pay attention to the back and forth between different time periods. Sometimes it can be confusing doing this in certain productions but here they did an excellentjob of delineating between different periods with costuming, hair styles etc.
I can only think of one instance where they slipped up with Firth's chaacter wearing the wrong type of glasses for the time period he was supposed to be in. Considering the number of jumps back and forth they did I think that's remarkable!
And I oved the air of ambiguity that the series took in the end. It wasn't "air tight" so there could be room for interpretation. Firth's acting in the final scene was remarkable!
One of the best limited series I've seen in a while.

I see the first episode of The Staircase in the tv listings for tonight, but they don’t give a description of the series. I am planning to watch it and hope it’s the one you were talking about here!
