TBH I haven't watched the movie and I don't plan to watch it. It's not my kind of movie and probably that's my issue with all the acclaim! Especially in "woke" Film Twitter! And ESPECIALLY after reading this wonderful Burr essay!
He said he don't consider this piece a review. It is not about the quality of the film (Die Hard is a great action film but it's also horribly Conservative in its politics).
This is the kind of interpretation critics used to do about a lot of 1980s Hollywood flicks. That's how we used to see them in the 1990s: the violent American myth! The pro-militarism! The hyper Conservative politics. But Film Twitter obsessed with identity politics and seeing itself as Progressive blindly celebretes this! So bizarre! We actually are more Conservative now than ever.
I liked the part in the essay about how the "enemy" doesn't even have a face because I remember they did the same in the first film. I was very young when I watched it and I sincerely thought they were fighting robots! It was just "the other", whoever they are! They are evil and deserve to die! They don't even have a face! They aren't human!

The morning news on tv just announced that Doctor Strange is in second place at the box office this week, after the new Top Gun. I’m trying to imagine a scenario where I would find TG enjoyable. Just watching the very long trailer at the movies was torture! I think the movie is meant to feel like a very loud video game - not for me!

I feel the same, Mllemass. Nothing could make me want to see that movie, not even for free! It is mythos building for the American exceptionalism crowd, which these days is making me sick to my stomach. Plus, Tom Cruise. Blech. There’s something weird about that man with all his testosterone posturing, lol.

I don’t know why articles keep saying that Tom Cruise doesn’t seem to age, or has maybe had plastic surgery. I disagree! He absolutely looks his age - although his dark hair has become unflattering with his skin tone now. He should either let his hair go grey, or dye it a lighter colour.
I know exactly how old he is, because he’s always been exactly 2 1/2 months older than me.
I also think that all these macho roles he does are overcompensating for his lack of height.

Look at this picture.
The other one that looks his age is Keanu Reeves. This picture is from 2019.

People are weird.
Retweeted by Cannes FF account. Expect, after Will Smith's win -whose film wasn't a hit-, all the talk on movies which were saving cinemas and the overdue narrative, a Tom Cruise BA Oscar.

Yeah, very silly! I don't think the well received by critics last Spider-Man movie should be nominated to the Oscar but neither Maverick! Lol
It seems that for some only Marvel movies are "franchises". I saw someone commenting Maverick was monopolizing theaters in the same way than Dr. Strange just to justifying it saying that it wasn't so bad like Disney because they weren't Disney and I bet that if it were Pixar and not Marvel, they wouldn't see an issue neither! Lol Those "Marvel critics" aren't differet to "Marvel fanatics"!
Also, still perplexed by liberal Twitter championing like that regressive flicks! Again, they could be good and deserve to be acclaimed (like Die Hard, for example) but it's fascinating to see how some liberal products can be accused of being "problematic" for some bizarre reason and openly regressive messages are just ignored if something is considered "cool"

OT but you know which Twitter reaction to a movie also bothered me to the point I don't want to watch the acclaimed movie now: Everything Everywhere All at Once.
I love Michelle Yeoh and when I heard about the film, I run to watch the trailer. TBH I wasn't very fond to the Multiverse thing because it's like when I read a festival summary of a movie about "a working class mother who is struggling with the fact that her kid... has superhero powers!" No, thanks! Why they are doing indie films that sound like the popular movies saturating the market?!
But it was acclaimed so surely it is good and then, I saw that Twitter was applauding the director for making sarcastic comments about anyone who dared to criticize his movie (wasn't that the same attitude that Twitter hated from people behind Don't Look Back: "my film is important anf if you don't like it, you are evil") Then the death threats began! Lol OK, maybe not threats but wishes! Seriously, there were fans of the movie saying that critics who didn't liked the silly sounding flick should die! I'm sure it was just a few idiots like it's always with other "fandoms" but apparently it's cool when certain "fandoms" do it!

Well I had to endure the long boring trailer, and every moment of it was awful!
I read some of the Twitter comments, and I’m trying to understand what people mean when they say that this movie “deserves” the box office results. As opposed to what - the movies that don’t deserve it?
