Wow! TBF I have read a few mixed comments about La Bete, too. But it’s slightly less divisive. It sounds really interesting!

I just want to comment that I have seen a few Latin American journalists and critics claiming that Pablo Larrin is the only Latin American filmmaker in the competition but the last scheduled film is by Mexican director Michel Franco! I mean he isn’t that obscure! His film is starred by a Hollywood actress!

From someone on AW
ICS 1. The Beast 2. Poor Things 3. The Killer 4. Evil Does Not Exist 5. The Theory of Everything
Italian Poll 1. Poor Things 2. Evil Does Not Exist 3. Green Border 4. Maestro 5. Enea
Russian Poll 1. Poor Things 2. The Killer 3. Ferrari 4. Green Border 5. Evil Does Not Exist
International Poll (which is mostly American or English language media, but it has also another 4 media from other countries/languages) 1. Poor Things 2. Green Border 3. Maestro 4. The Beast 4. Evil Does Not Exist
Movies loved in 4/4: Poor Things Evil Does Not Exist
Movies loved in 3/4: Green Border
Movies loved in 2/4: The Killer Maestro The Beast
Movies topping polls: Poor Things (3/4) The Beast (1/4)
Also Poor Things is second when it's not first. The Beast seems more divisive.

I mean he isn’t that obscure! His film is starred by a Hollywood actress! Perhaps it is because the only movie in Spanish is Larrain's. Franco's movie is like a co-production México/USA (? - it's a question) and is in English. Other Larrain's movies, like Spencer, I don't know how they were considered.

TBF, I have seen a few articles mentioning both filmmakers now that I googled it but I watched these three comments/article without in the last days without searched for them. www.periodismochileno.cl/entretenimiento/2023/7/25/pablo-larrain-hace-historia-en-el-festival-de-venecia-con-el-conde-51815.htmlI guess this is ambiguous because it has Chile flag. Maybe he was suggesting he was the only”Latino” from Chile. I was about to corrected him but I doubted because the flag! x.com/pippeflores/status/1697237039287353397?s=61&t=zPi8LNXgo1ojcMDphmjG3gThis is unambiguous x.com/pamelacortes/status/1696926746023543079?s=61&t=zPi8LNXgo1ojcMDphmjG3gMaybe they are all from South America but it’s obvious that they aren’t very knowledgeable about other filmmakers from Latinoamérica. Again, Franco is a constant presence in international festivals. It’s also probably the Netflix factor. It’s just a huge platform and a lot of people have already heard about it but probably not about Franco’s, who is in general a much darker filmmaker than Larrain., too. And I say “in general” because some Larrain’s Spanish speaking films can also be pretty dark. At least, El Club and Tony Manero are very disturbing and dark but his Hollywood films about famous women are cute and nice and surely they have been seen by much more people. Buy the way, I really can’t wait to watch El Conde! It was scheduled exactly on my birthday!
