Dan and I have been watching this old HBO prison drama series. It took a while to get invested in the characters but it eventually did happen and now we are quite enjoying it.
The pluses are really quality actors and a gritty atmosphere.
Over the seasons the stories have become better written and the characters more complex.
One thing I really like is that you NEVER know when a character will be cut. And they are always infusing the stories with fresh blood with influx of new prisoners.
It's got multiple storylines happening throughout so if one doesn't interest you there are plenty others to pique your interest.
Sometimes it's a bit ham fisted with the narrator's interjections and it is VERY visually graphic and often brutal.
And if you have an aversion to seeing LOTS of penises (and I mean LOTS!!) this isn't the series for you. It makes me chuckle thinking of the kerfuffle about BC's two second flash of his member in 2022 and here was this late 1990s show flashing more male flesh than a Chippendales show!
I found some interesting things about this show. It was the first HBO series and was the forerunner of the other successful HBO series ( Sopranos, The Wire etc.).
A LOT of the cast went on to have very successful careers - Edie Falco, Christopher Meloni, J.K. Simmons, J. D. Williams to name a few.
Other fantastic actors include BD Wong and Rita Morano - who are both an absolute pleasure to watch.
If you can struggle through the first half of Season One the rest seems well worth the rough start.
