There was an article recently in The Fail (which I didn’t care to link to), that claimed BC made £250k signing autographs at some con recently. I don’t know if that’s true, but if it’s a good way to make some money, what’s wrong with that?
Otoh, it does seem a little crass, to be making tons of money off fans’ adoration, and I had thought the cons made the bulk of the money off those autograph sessions, but I don’t really know the truth or how that works.
Oto,oh if I could make $100k out of signing my name for a day or two, I’d do it. It’s money. 🤷🏻♀️
He has done a few cons. I don’t think recently but yeah, some British press are always criticizing him for it as they also criticizes Martin Freeman for not accepting to meet fans in the same events!
I don’t know how it works but someone once said what the celebrity receives is much less than what it’s announced because obviously the organizers gain a lot and spend a lot on things like security, hotels and personal. In the old days, people used to think that only has beens did cons but that’s not the case anymore. I remember one of the early events BC did, I guess the Sherlock thing, he originally refused to go but then fans got angry on social media (again accusing them of not respecting fans) because neither him nor Freeman would be there and then he was convinced or suddenly changed his mind. Actually, he also changed hus mind about singing autographs after Hamlet at teh last minute after being criticizing for announcing he wouldn’t do it. So it’s a double edged sword!
EDITED But yeah, it’s very expensive and I would never spend that amount of money on autographs! Nor cons! I’m happy with only paying for his films and maybe some magazines! I don’t need to meet him!
I don’t know if that’s true, but if it’s a good way to make some money, what’s wrong with that?
This isn’t at all like a personal appearance, though. If someone said that I could meet him and have him sign a poster for $700, I might do it. I would know that a lot of the money was going to pay for the venue and all the people working there, and not for a $10 poster signed by a celebrity.
I will be keeping my hopes up that he’s donating the money to charity!

It seems a little tacky, but no worse than the conventions he has done. He probably needs money for Sunnymarch. At least he won't be bothered by stalkers at a send-in service. Remember that poor fan who thought she was dating him, and showed up at both of the cons he did in Australia?
It is a Marvel thing having to do with Dr Strange.
This is a comic book related company that will take items you send to them and have the celebrity sign it when they are signing other things (posters, comic books, etc), then they send the item back with an authentification certificate. They also have items for sale, like posters, that you can preorder.
So, for instance, if you sewed your own version of The Cloak, you can send it to them for this event and BC will sign it.
On the "upcoming events page" there are a number of Marvel actors who are doing this.
I assume he is doing it because it is in his contract. Of course he is being paid, but it also continues to promote his Marvel movies, too. Plus, it seems like this is an easy, non-infectious way to do a celebrity appearance without actually having to interact with the public.
