Huh? Since when does Ryan Gosling have the best movie opportunities? I wouldn’t have wanted Benedict in any role that RG has had.
Don’t forget that Benedict’s production company has been busy, too. And The Grinch was a huge financial success. And The Current War isn’t out yet!

Your post ellie, is a "thief to my thoughts" exactly!
Ben seems to be following a very much CHOSEN game/life plan. I think he has prioritised his career around his own production company, with forays into "Hollywood" when the opportunities come up that also align with all his other considerations (like how it impacts his family, how it challenges him with something he finds interesting, etc.).
And it also seems that he actually is interested in doing a wide variety of acting formats - TV, movies, stage, radio, animations, voice overs, commercials etc.

Is Benedict having difficulty getting high profile jobs? I havent followed him too closely but it seems he has been stuck in mediocrity ever since Dr Strange? Patrick Melrose was the only decent bit he did. Not that that movie was that great to begin with. I mean Ben did a lot of tv shows and some disappointing films like TCW and Mowgli. What's going on? Someone like Ryan Gosling gets the best movie opportunities while Benedict is a far superior actor. I hope we get to see Benedict in more fantastic films as opposed to mediocre film after film. I loved The Child in Time, Patrick Melrose and Brexit. I think all of them were risky projects he really wanted to do. They were for TV but sadly TV is the place to take risk nowadays! The Grinch made a lot of money and that was the intention so it worked for him. TCW and Mowgli aren't even recent films so I doubt they are symptoms of what roles are he getting right now. Netflix buying Mowgli was also a happy coincidence for him because the production wasn't the predicted box-office missfire so his two 2018 films were actually huge hits. He was in two of the ten biggest box office movies of the year! His movies factually make money. I actually like Ryan Gosling films and without doubt I would like to see BC working with big names like him. On the other hand his capacity to attract audiences was strongly questioned last year. His movies are great but were considered disappointments. So success is very subjective but if you measure it in money then BC is a much more successful actor! I doubt he has any problem to find "high profile jobs". The TV projects are his artistic vehicles and I would dare to say that his last three TV productions are superior to a lot of awarded recent films. I would like to see him work with great filmmakers but Patrick Melrose is at the level of something like Roma and Brexit is much better than Vice IMHO.

Out of curiosity, I just looked up the stuff that Ryan Gosling has done, in case I was missing something. Just as I thought, I found a list of movies that I either hadn’t heard of or hadn’t been interested in seeing. The movies I did see weren’t very good. And I really hated The Notebook, which most of the world seemed to love. Right after I saw it, I remember telling someone that it would have been OK as a made-for-tv movie, but it certainly didn’t belong in a movie theatre. I was actually kind of angry that I had spent money to watch a movie that I probably would have skipped if it had been on tv for free. So I would be very disappointed if Benedict decided to have a career similar to RG!
The interesting part of RG’s filmography was the list of his early Canadian tv roles. I had no idea that he had been in those old shows I used to watch!

Have you watched Half Nelson? It's a lovely and wonderful movie. I think he is brilliant in it.
I didn't like The Notebook but undoubtedly it made him a star and a leading man. Then he made some eccentric romantic comedies much more daring than The Notebook, Lars and the Real Girl and Crazy, Stupid, Love.
He also associated himself with "real" filmmakers: Nicolas Winding Refn, Terrence Malik, Deniseneuve and Damien Chazelle.
I think he is a great actor but, yes, I have read a few cynical comments because the cold audience reception of First Man. And Blade Runner wasn't the big hit it was being predicted.

I’m thrilled BC hasn’t “sold out” to Hollywood. He’s more than a pretty face, and comes from a different type of acting lineage, one that revers the theatre, and pays close attention to text. An actor’s actor in the great British tradition. Hollywood, for the most part, makes bunch of crap movies designed to rake in as much money as possible, and doesn’t care about careers in the same way as they do across the pond.
I adore the small movies he makes, they really show his craft. I thought Patrick Melrose was the best thing he’s ever done, and that includes Sherlock.

I had to google RG, as I thought he was the guy who played Deadpool. I didn't see Blade Runner, but it was critically acclaimed. I did see LaLa Land, and thought he was very good in it!

I think Ryan Gosling is a good actor but I agree with QZ, BC is on a different kind of career path. Not better or worse. Just different. And he’s doing pretty well so far!

I like the fact that he’s picky about his roles but not a snob. I’m happy that he doesn’t agree to be in just any goofy romantic comedy. When he does goofy, he takes it to the extreme - like playing All in Zoolander 2!

I like it that he is picky with his projects - I am sure he gets a lot of silly offers he refuses - but on the other hand he is a bit unlucky with high profile projects, like TCW, Mowgli or even Rio. However, I have to say very honestly, that I am not mad about his last projects - Brexit and Ironbark. I've watched the first, intend to watch the second, but they just not make me excited like Patrick Melrose did.
