I also think it’s the way his face is fuller. His biggest „physical trademark“, the razor sharp cheekbones of Sherlock times are no longer there. I‘m not sure … has he simply gained weight like us normal people do or is it muscles? Could also be a change in his physique due to possible meds the character, I really mean the character he’s playing - not BC, is taking for mental health problems?! Most people gain weight when taking them (partly it‘s because of more water in your body, partly a slower metabolism). Also, emotional crises lead to not caring about your diet and exercise as you normally do. (I know what I‘m talking about here from personal experiences, oh yes …)
My whole point here: The additional weight could be a part of BC‘s way to tackle the character Vincent. Just as he did with e.g. Sherlock, only in the opposite way.
I have to believe it’s a conscious choice for the character. He is so disciplined when it comes to his craft, so precise and meticulous, I can’t imagine he’s packed on a stone (or two), just because he’s been laying around on vacation helping finish his kids’ plates, lol, and it “got away from him” like it can for us regular schlubs. There’s method (if I may use that word), to all his character choices.
Wallaby, I also thought about weight gain as a result of depression or meds, or that he’s playing a regular American and we’re known to be larger, or he just wanted that more solid look for Vincent, or, or, or…
Maybe he’ll talk about it on the promo tour!
He’ll never again be as slim as he was for Sherlock, but that’s okay. I like a bit of meat on my man. Gives ya more to hang onto. 😁
I agree, queenzod! The weight gain definitely has a conscious reason or purpose because of this role.
As I said before, he must be a disciplined eater (hence wanting to become vegan) and also very careful regarding regular exercise. And we know he‘s pretty vain too, lol! (Which I don’t consider a flaw at all, btw.)
Long story short: I liked him as a frail Sherlock and I like him now with a more homely body and approaching age 50. People change over the years anyway. It‘s part of acquiring more life experience.
Chances are high he will have to adress this topic, as we know in general our society and the media are crazy about anything that has to do with weight.

I think he looks the same as all of his frumpy, everyday-type characters: Little Charles from A:OC, the Child in Time father, etc. It would be strange if this dad character was willowy and fashionable like Sherlock, or muscled up like Khan from STID. Maybe he is supposed to look as ordinary as possible, to contrast with the bizarre monster puppet.
