They released a trailer. I think it's awful but I read posts adoring it.
Agreed that it looks really bad! I guess Film Twitter or Film Social Media in general are doing their thing and being positive just because the people behind it. The question is it is a kid’s movie or not? Because it probably could work as a nostalgic thing for some. After all, that’s why Star Wars and superhero movies are a big deal: a whole generation of adults obsessed with the things they loved when they were kids (although it works better for males than females and Barbie was for girls). But I’m not sure today’s girls still love Barbie and the center joke in the trailer (Ken wanting to sleep with Barbie but not knowing why/what to do with her) seems slightly “daring” for very small girls. We will see what they are really doing because TBH I don’t think the trailer is very clear about which it’s the plot (Is Ken the villain?) or who is the target audience. It seems to me just like a pretty looking but not very funny SNL sketch trying to make fun of the doll.

Apparently, Film Twitter is very angry at Greta Gerwing for accepting to do a new version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe for Netflix and announcing that she wants to make big studio films now. Some think it’s sad that she seems to think franchises are the same than studio films. Others are angry at her critics because well, they still haven’t watched what she will do and she is free to do whatever she likes!
I sincerely don’t have any opinion about her career plans except that how the hell is CS Lewis more commercially “problematic” than Barbie?! I just read someone saying her trajectory was obvious since she did Little Women! And I agreed it’s a very conventional movie that was greeted like if it were something revolutionary but it’s classical literature. Barbie is for much the most “sinful” project in that regard. It’s perplexing it’s being received as an arty little film and that she is now judged for another literary adaptation! Maybe it’s because is Netflix and her Barbie was made for movie theatre. After all, Tom Cruise is now almost acclaimed like an “auteur” but believe me Barbie, Mission Impossible, Top Gun are closer to Marvel than any classical literature adaptation!

A film critic tweeted yesterday that he had seen the movie but can’t review it yet because there’s still an embargo. He thought it was weird, though, that they were encouraged to say nice things about it on social media in the meantime. So they’re not allowed to say negative things about it.
Whatever happens, I still have no desire to ever see it. The more ads and promotions I see for it, the worse it looks to me.

They lifted the embargo yesterday.
MC 81 with 48 reviews.
RT 90 (Top critics 88) Average 8.3 (8.2) with 119 (48) reviews.
I didn't love GG's movies, to me they were average, I'll never understand such a praise for her. Perhaps it's the almost hate I had for Lady Bird, the character. Also I hated Marriage Story, or its protagonist played by Adam Driver. I think I really don't like GG and NB on whom those characters were based (although I know almost nothing about them ).

They are good filmmakers but nothing extraordinary. Just typical indie American filmmakers. Nothing that Hal Hartley, Whit Stillman or, I'm daring to name him, Woody Allen did before them.
I guess she is trying something new with Barbie! She literally said it when it was announced she will do more commercial stuff now! Good for her, I guess. But yeah, not interested on a Barbie movie! Lol It's ironic that some people who moan about other commercial stuff are going bonkers for this!
The other day, I saw a tweet making fun of an article saying that people were discovering that Aqua's Barbie lyrics were "problematic" and it's interesting because it was a very dumb disposable song but they aren't giving any credit to us 1990s people! Of course, people understood the lyrics then but also the concept of sarcasm. Things weren't literal then! Being a "Barbie" wasn't something desirable! She wasn't a feminist symbol but the complete opposite! That's why the song treat her like, well, a plastic doll used by men.

Back in the 1980’s , there was a dumb joke going around:”Did you hear about Divorced Barbie? She comes with all of Ken’s stuff!”
And let’s not forget the talking Barbie that came out years ago! One of the things she said was “Math class is tough”. Mattel got a lot of flak for that, and the Simpsons even did an episode with Lisa being upset about the new talking Malibu Stacy saying “Thinking too much gives you wrinkles” and “Don’t ask me, I’m just a girl”.
(I looked up the actual phrases on Wikipedia)

Lady Bird feels like an indie movie but one of the producers was Scott Rudin. Amy Pascal produced Little Women, for Sony, True that Greta wrote for and acted in some indie movies. NB is more of an auteur and indie director imo.
Little Women had nothing special (except the whiteness and the weird acting of Florence I'm mean), that is, it was a normal adaptation with nothing revolutionary.
Lady Bird was just like most of the coming of age movies, an outsider who tries to fit with the cool girls, that betrays her friend, that has a difficult relation with her mother who worked all day, was the sole provider in that home, cared for other children but was portrayed as the bad person. No, no.
I'm not saying GG isn't good but the discourse around her as if she were one of the great directors (for LB) is too much. Maybe Barbie changes my mind.
By the way, Timmy was very forgettable in both of her movies.

I refused to watch Lady Bird because I had read reviews saying that it was a lot like an episode of Gilmore Girls (meant in a negative way, of course). I’m sorry, but you cannot copy my beloved Gilmore Girls with different actors!

lol what a polemic around Barbie! I’ll watch it when it comes to streaming, I think it looks interesting, possibly funny, and might have a thing or two to say. At least it’s brightly lit and not about an army of Kens who drink blood and suck your face off (I hope).

Well, I could read a recap if you write one.
I looked at the Barbie subreddit thinking it was about the movie. There was a post asking if anyone was bringing their dolls to the movie. I couldn't believe such a thing. After asking how old they were I left reddit and then I realised that subreddit must be about the dolls. Haha
