I used to read Empire but gave up at certain point, because their reviews didn't convince me at all. It is not easy to find a good film magazine nowadays. In any case I bet Benedict won't attend.

He isn't attending. The list was published earlier and he wasn't on it. Louise Brealy represented the Sherlock team.,

Well the good news is that Doctor Strange won for Best Special Effects.

Well the bad news is it didn't win anything else. I mean, Rogue one the best film of the year? Really? I liked the J.J.Abrams's reboot the previous year, even if it was basically updated 1997 version, but this film was just SW money-maker filler. And Eddie Redmayne best actor? The film was a mess, but still his performance was a low point of it, even most critics said that. And accolades for Night Manager, again? The only bright point was the award for Daniel Blake - an excellent film indeed. I am glad BC didn't attend, at least he was spared saying for the 100th time how honoured he feels to be just nominated.

I think poor BC is destined to be this generation's Peter O'Toole. Umpteen nominations, very few wins. I swear if BC were the only one nominated for best actor at the BAFTAs he would still lose. 😀

I've given up on Bafta. They have given awards to virtually everything/ everyone on Sherlock, but to the person who was the key factor of the show's success. But I really, really wish some recognition given to BC for the Hollow Crown - much as I love(d) Sherlock, his Richard III was just extraordinary.

Does anyone know why he's been snubbed by the BAFTAS so many times? Did he piss off Steven Fry or something?

Haha I looked at the people who went and with some exceptions - Redmayne, Jones, Stewart, the director of Rogue One, the actor of I, Daniel Blake, Hiddleston and some more - all the pictures taken on the "red carpet" were of people I didn't know. Where were the Ryans, Emma Stone, Benedict, Amy Adams? That picture was false advertising, very deceptive.
I totally agree with you. You forgot Felicity Jones as best actress. That is so ridiculous!
Next Bafta will award Toby the dog as best supporting actor and no BC.

Does anyone know why he's been snubbed by the BAFTAS so many times? Did he piss off Steven Fry or something? All his nomination with one exception were for Best Actor which it's of course one of the most competitive categories. He should have been nominated for Parade's End, tho. The series, him and Rebeca Hall won a few British critics awards and then were semi ignored by the BAFTAS. At least Rebeca Hall was nominated but didn't won. BC and the series were later nominated to the Emmys. It's a crazy thing with Sherlock because he is the star. I mean Freeman is great and everything but BC is the charismatic center of it but again he is in the much more competitive category. Probably he will finally win it in a grittier role. Maybe with The Child in Time or Melrose. He was sublime in The Hollow Crown but it happened a long time ago so I wouldn't be surprise if the judges forget it. About the Empire awards probably he didn't attend because he knew he wouldn't win. I suspect they tell the winner beforehand. Also it's a voting thing and even when Marvel is popular I can see Harry Potter and maybe Star War fans being more obsessive about it. Probably he would have won if we were in the golden years of the Tumblr craziness (Thank God, we are not anymore!).

I think he's just been very unlucky with the BAFTA's. I don't think there's anything more to it than that really. He should have got something for Parade's End and he definitely should be nominated for Richard III but who knows. He simply isn't lucky with awards.
