I actually spend so time seeing the rotten tomatoes scores of a few Marvel actors since they joined Marvel (not their whole careers! I wanted to know how Marvel “affected” them) and it’s very interesting. I don’t “believe” on those scores but that’s how they are judging Holland!
A lot of them have films with terrible scores! Lol Especially the Americans. Chris Evans is frequently cited as “the best Chris” but he had a few movies at 20% and 30%! Evans worked with one auteur (only one!), Bong Joon-Ho and made a beloved by social media critically acclaim (IMHO mid) flick with Knives Out so that’s what supports his reputation. Clearly, Pratt is the super star of the three with a lot of box office hits franchises but not arty acclaimed films and he is hated by social media because he is a Conservative so a failure, I guess!
Of those I checked, the ones with more scores above 70% are Scarlett Johansson and Tom Hiddleston with 12 films each since they joined Marvel. BC is second with 11. He is followed by Mark Ruffalo with 7. Of course all of them joined at the different times and work with different rhythms but, for example, BC and TH have made almost the same number of films since they joined. BC works more and he joined more recently. Still, I was surprised how many jobs TH has done at the same time than Loki and how consistently well received they are. Most of them are at the beginning but remember that he is frequently cited as an actor affected by his Marvel contract. I believed he was more affected than that! It just seems that he slowed the rhythm in recent times and he doesn’t receives too much award attention like Ruffalo, Johansson and BC.
Also, I found funny that, of those I checked, only BC has a 100% RT score with The Hollow Crown: The War of the Roses. Two points more than The Hollow Crown with Hiddleston (only 98% 😉).
I think the issue, if there is one, is that a lot of them just slow their rhythm of work after joining Marvel. That seems to had happened with Downey Jr and Brie Larson. Downey Jr. actually made Tropic Thunder and was nominated to the Oscar after he did Iron Man. It was part of his comeback but the narrative changed from “it’s great that he is now an acclaimed actor with a big box office hit after all his problems” to “his career was ruined by Marvel!”. It was considered the opposite at the time. It’s just that he decided to enjoy his new fame and money instead for chasing more artistic goals.
The bad scores aren’t infrequent with some of the younger stars. Maybe the difference is the hype those projects received. I think everyone is waiting for the consolidation of Holland outside Marvel and all eyes are over him right now. He just need a really good project that makes some noise.
Olsen has 5 non-Marvel projects with scores over 70% (and a few awful received indie projects) since she joined. The same than Hemsworth and Rudd but one less than Evans. Holland has 4 (Boseman had only 3 but a) he did a very few movies; b) the three were high profile serious projects; c) he received Oscar nominations for two of them) She doesn’t seem to me particularly different to the other “typical” Marvel actors in that regard. She is a wonderful promising actress who, like Holland, made a huge impact in her early career. I think she also slowed her rhythm during Marvel. She still had a very acclaimed indie movie at the beginning of her Marvel tenure with Wild River (alongside Jeremy Renner so she isn’t the exception of anything!) and an acclaimed series that I haven’t watched called Sorry for you Lose. After that, her biggest hit was WandaVision which obviously is still Marvel. Love and Death wasn’t so well received (a 62% RT score, the thing we are judging here) but the performances were so I think she still could get an Emmy nomination. After all, she is campaigning hard for it and has HBO behind her. Still, I don’t think that’s the big critical hit his fans seems to believe that erase all the achievements of all the other Marvel actors! Lol
I didn’t checked Cate Blanchet, Robert Redford, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel or other with more “discreet” Marvel roles. Actually, I also forgot Jeremy Renner who I mentioned above! Lol But I checked all the ones starring in solo movies plus Hiddleston and Olsen.
