It looks like every newspaper is repeating the same story, including the part about them naming the baby after a character played by Tom Hiddleston. Isn't it much more likely that little Hal was actually named after Benedict's grandfather and great-grandfather - both of whom were named Henry?

And do we think they're going to have more? I picture him with lots of children for some reason! I think maybe they might be tempted to try for a girl but I don't know, Sophie will be 40 next year so it's getting a little late in the day.

The Hiddlestone stories are ridiculous. Surely if they were going to call the baby after him they would have named him Thomas. More idiotic journalism.

I agree about the speculation as to why the baby was named that he was. We probably never know unless BC himself talks about at some point in the future in an interview. It is like all the "in the know" stuff that came out about Cumberbaby #1 being named after a character that BC played in Parade's End. All just supposition and jumping to conclusions without any basis of knowledge whatsoever. Babies are named for any number of reasons. Goodness sometimes it isn't even a name that is significant to the parents. I was named purely because my mom and dad just liked the sound of the name. It held absolutely no significance for either of them at all, other than it was nice sounding. And my middle name "Joy" was just sarcasm/relief because mine was a very difficult birth (11 pounds and a breech birth). LOL! I taught a child once who was named after a hockey arena's nickname (and it wasn't weird sounding at all) and another who was named "Chance" because the parents told me he was conceived by "chance" on a vacation. A good friend of mine was named "Cort" because his parents were on vacation in Mexico when they conceived him (and "Cort" was supposed to be a short form for "Cortes" after the Spanish Conquistador). :-))

My Italian cousin and his English wife wanted to give their son and daughter middle names that reflected their heritage as well as their love of literature - so the boy got Dante and the girl Bronte. They're in their 20's now, and they're used to explaining their middle names to people who wonder.

He did say once that he would like to have many children, so who knows... On the other hand they are not very very young parents. Sophie will be 40 next year, so of course she could have another baby, but she is not exactly in her prime.

But why would they name their son after someone who hasn't dated Taylor Swift? 😉 Maybe they named him after Bryan Cranston! (See igs post) Him and BC looked very friendly with each other in that Graham Norton episode so it's logical he now names his newborn after him, right? LOL

Isn't it much more likely that little Hal was actually named after Benedict's grandfather and great-grandfather - both of whom were named Henry? No. Cause "Cumberbatch baby named after grandfather" doesn't make a click-baity, name-droppey and flashy headline like any Cumberbatch/Hiddleston combo does. It's like when he got engaged it was "Benedict Cumberbatch to marry - Martin Freeman rumored to be best man!" cause that's what The Fail readers want to see.

I haven't read the "Fail" story because I hate that paper. But I see in the quotes from it they slipped in a reference to the fact the baby was born in the "£1200 per night Portland Hospital." That was deliberate in order to provoke the usual "champagne socialist, migrant supporting luvvie" comments from the Fail's bigoted little Englander readers. No doubt BC is being blamed for the Westminster attack by now.

They had a whole article about Hiddleston not knowing what a pint of milk costs one day. They're so desperate. Like what the hell, if I was super rich I'd have my baby in some fancy private hospital too, what's wrong with that? Everyone should be happy if the rich people don't burden the NHS and instead opt to pay for their health care in private clinics.
