I also am an ardent atheist who loves celebrating Christmas and visiting churches. I don't like Christmas but I love visiting churches too. I even go to services and stuff once in a while (like once or twice a year) although I'm atheist. Churches smell nice and I like the atmosphere (I'm Finnish, so obviously being quiet together is something that occasionally appeals to me lol) and the sound of the organ. Life is full of little contradictions. I'm not married but I've always thought that if I'll get married I'll change my name if it's a) nicer than mine, b) rarer than mine, c) more global-sounding than mine ie. something that gets me less "huh....?" reactions to it abroad or d) starts with an "S" - my first and middle name start with S and I'm a fan of alliteration. So my reasons are totally superficial lol not traditional at all, but who cares. Cumberbatch is definitely a much more unique name than Hunter, too.

I don't know if you can read it or not but this tweet was put up this morning by actor Mark Dexter and says -
Cumberbatch & I worked together on Heartbeat in 2004 when my son was 2. My son Hal. He thought Hal was a great name. Clearly wasn't kidding. 7:13 AM · Mar 27, 2017
So apparently BC has been thinking about this name for quite a while!!! 😂

Not to carry on this personal bit too long but I had to laugh about your post. Yes, life little curve balls get thrown all the time! Reminds me of the declaration when I was in high school that I made that I would never marry anyone whose name started with a "Mc" or "Mac" because there would always be confusion that would require clarification. You can guess what happened of course - I fell in love with a guy whose family name started with "Mc" and almost 43 years later here I am always having to clarify that it isn't "Mac"when I tell people our family name! 😂 You just never know how life is going to go (although when you are in your teens you certainly think you know)!!! :-))

I once worked with someone whose son was named Elliott. He told me that most people assumed he got it from our former Prime Minister, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, when in fact he got it from E.T. So you never really know where parents get their inspiration!
And for the record, if the opportunity to become Mrs Cumberbatch ever presents itself, I will gladly change my name!

Not only would I insist on being called Mrs. Cumberbatch, I'd obnoxiously correct people. "It's MRS. Benedict Cumberbatch. Yes, I'm married to BENEDICT. We share a bed." And I would have it embroidered on all my clothing in big red letters.
So it's probably good I'm not. I'd turn into the Kim Kardashian of Mrs. Benedict Cumberbatches. 😂
