I would recommend a visit to Tate Modern via a walk along the South Bank of the Thames from the National Theatre. You see lots of interesting places en route and after you've seen the exhibits (many of which divide opinion) at the TM, its restaurant is a great place to stop for lunch - especially if you get a window seat as it has fabulous views over the City of London.
Would also recommend visiting the restaurant in The Shard. I'd recommend going at night as the views over nightime London are quite spectacular. The food ain't bad either! If you don't want to eat there's a lovely Bar area where you can just have a drink and enjoy the view.
Finally, I would thoroughly recommend a tour of The Royal Opera House. It gives fabulous behind the scenes access and information.
By the way I love the house you're renting.

Thanks Ellie for the suggestions!
Going to the Tate and the Tate Modern is one of the main motivations for this trip in the first place! We definitely will be taking in both. The walking route you have suggested seems wonderful and we will absolutely try to do that!
I had already considered a visit to the Shard restaurant (or the bar). I have seen some pix taken from the Shard's restaurant and they seem spectacular.
The Royal Opera house tour - hadn't considered that one, but since I am a big opera fan and love all things architectural I think a tour would be a great outing!
Thanks!

It's been too many years since I ate out in London. And it had never even occurred to me that you could eat at the likes of the top of the Shard. Obvious, really, just not something I'd ever thought about. Sounds lovely, though! I'm always partial to a bit of sushi and Japanese cuisine generally, myself, and I used to go to a little Japanese place on one of the side streets off Covent Garden, but there's been an explosion of Japanese restaurants since then. Given the dietary requirements, I'd say investigating those might be a good idea. And if you've never had the archetypal Fish 'n Chips, as traditional with the batter, then that has to be a must too at some point. The Lisson Grove place, the Sea shell, was quoted for years as being the best in London, but it doesn't seem to make any "best of" list now. There are lots worth investigating, though. And you can't beat fish 'n chips sometimes, especially when it really isn't something one could do at home just as well. Just make sure it's proper beer batter and double fried chips. A bit of a favourite place of mine has always been Leighton House as well (Holland Park), the fabulous home and studio of Frederick, Lord Leighton. Well worth a visit at any time regardless, but every now and again they hold a little event there as well. I've only ever caught one, myself, which was by accident rather than design, but it was lovely (in that case) listening to a classical quartet play as one wandered round. Slight disadvantage, though, in that I wasn't able to look closer at the paintings in that room which was what I'd wanted to do, but lovely regardless! They've got another on the 13th May, which might be worth thinking about, and there's complimentary wine, but it really is worth a visit any time. Beautiful place! Leighton House

Both Hubby and myself LOVE Japanese food so I definitely will take those suggestions under consideration. :-))
Riight now we are sipping wine in Pearson International Airport waiting for our checkin. Pearson is under construction but I still love it. I have already met and talked to a fellow traveler and had a great time and the woman behind the bar is really pleasant and poured a bit extra in our glasses.
we have a long wait until we board but I for one never mind airports - free wifi, watching the board taking people to exotic places, we have booked a lounge with food and booze and wifi for a couple of hours before boarding - what's not to love!!
Having fun already and I haven't even left Canadian soil.

Bon voyage! I hope your flight isn't delayed by the fog. It looks like it's clearing up a bit now.
I look forward to reading about your adventures!

Our flight doesn't leave until 10 pm so it has a while yet to clear up before we fly out.

In the lounge and the plane is still listed as being "on time". Now nothing to do but wait listening to the mood music, enjoying our Johnny Walker, eat and read.ππππ₯π·ππ₯

I think you might be flying into a fairly dull day but nice nonetheless. Well timed I think! And apart from my preference being for an Irish whiskey, that does sound really nice in the waiting lounge.

Well, if they had had Irish whiskey I would certainly have picked that! LOL!
Actually we usually have Jameson but recently i bought a bottle of 15 year old Dalwhinnie single malt which is pretty good. ;-))
