I think they were saying that because it was the Opera house. Remember it's not just an European country but Hungary! Their art tradition, especially around music and ballet, is sacred.
Some were defending him saying dressing up for it was old fashioned, tho.

Welp, I guess everyone where I live is dressed like a homeless person because we ALL wear khakis, flannel/chambray shirts over t-shirts, and boots of various kind in my state. Like, seriously. It is the required uniform. Is this your attempt to convince BC (who may be lurking for all we know) to move into your house because he'll fit right in? 😂 Because if it is, you've got some competition. I'm the queen of oversized layers and I have a spare room. Also, no international flight required. 😝 You joke, but, honestly, BC would have to have his own place. I am not sure there is room enough on the couch because of all of the dogs.

I also can't believe people are allowed to eat and drink during theatre performances these days.

We all know that when Benedict gets dressed without the help of a stylist, we never know what we’ll get. That’s one of the adorable traits we love about him! Ha!
When I was in London many years ago, I was shocked to see them selling ice cream during intermission at Cats. They came right into the audience to sell it. There’s no way food and drinks are allowed in theatres here. There are just different customs in different countries.
And a few years back, my cousin was visiting from Italy and came with me and my friends to see Elton John (it was his “farewell” tour, the first of many!). Afterwards, my cousin told me that Canadians dress really badly. He decided that after observing thousands of people at the concert. I tried to explain to him that the concert took place in a stadium, and we were all sitting in those tiny sports-arena seats. It wasn’t a theatre with carpeting and fancy velvet seats. I tried to tell him that we really do dress up in a proper theatre, but he wasn’t buying it. Of course Italians dress better than we do! I sadly noticed it in my first minutes in Italy in 2002. Everyone there looked like they had walked out of a fashion magazine. All the time! Even my nicest clothes looked frumpy or clownish.

In London, I was shocked at how casually everyone dressed when going out to dinner at fine dining places, even Michelin starred restaurants! It was jeans and jumpers mostly, although nice, not torn, and well fitting. But still, I was expecting suits and ties. I felt tremendously underdressed even though my brother said I looked fine. I was glad I had all black clothing to wear. 😅
BC did look better at the opera than JD did at that place, though. Ben only had on 3 shirts and baggy trousers, and they weren’t stained or torn. But it was pretty low end casual for an opera, imo.

Maybe he was also wearing three pairs of trousers. That’s why the outer ones needed to be baggy. 😂. He does love his layers!

Someone posted a screenshot of Benedict in that video.
