We actually have a very little information but I thought in The Third Man because Joseph Cotten and Orson Wells play old friends. One of them a poor writer who goes to visit his friend to a foreign and strange country; and the other a successful businessman, who is actually a criminal. The big difference, I guess, is that Cotten doesn't know Wells feigned his death until half of the movie.
There are a few similarities with The Passenger but it's more about stealing another person identity and Strangers on Train is about well... two strangers planning to commit crimes (with one of them thinking it was just a silly conversation and the other one being really serious about it).
But who knows? Maybe the movie will be more like Fox's Rio than any of these! 😉

The Passenger is a little different in that Jack Nicholson's character didn't plan to fake his own death or assume someone else's identity, but spontaneously took advantage of an opportunity. I do think his main motivation was a spiritual crisis or unhappiness that made hime want to abandon the life he had made. he did have to deceive his wife and everyone who knew him. Body Heat is another movie where a character fakes her death, but that doesn't come until the end. Of course, there's Sherlock! How could I forget? LOL! SaveSave

Rio. ❤ My favorite city in the world. How exciting!
And ever since JG was supposed to be in The Current War I've wanted him and BC to co-star in something, so I wish these rumors are true!

I was reading some of the Twitter reactions to this news, and I was surprised that some of JG's fans are not happy that he's doing a movie with Benedict. "He deserves better," someone said. Better than Benedict? How is that even possible?
On the other hand, someone else was already coming up with their Hollywood couple names - "Gyllenbatch" was my favourite!

I remember JG being very under appreciated when he was perceived as an actor with a strong female fan base. He was an acclaimed young promise then Brokeback Mountain happened and Hollywood tried to make him a leading man. I'm talking about that moment. Then later he did a few roles considered not just artistic but very masculine and suddenly he was loved by cinema fan boys. I think Nightcrawler was the key role.
BC is very respected by critics but some people still resentful that it seems most of his fans are female. Probably things are slowly changing with Marvel. I think it's that and of course the typical and silly fan girls rivalry!
I think JG and his absolutely wonderful sister Maggie G are both great actors and the potential was clear since little movies like October Sky. I have to confess that I wasn't a big fan of Heath Ledger before watching BM so I was perplexed when he was more acclaimed than JG (of course, he was great in it and deserved all that acclaim!) who I considered the superior actor.

I think this is an interesting project too. I am not a huge JG fan, and I didn't actually like "Brokeback Mountain" as much as most people seemed to, but I did think he was good in it. I liked the mentioned "Nightcrawler" better and I also think that that was a key role for him. A really good film where JG was both well cast and very good. I also very much liked "Source Code", but that was more because of the other elements of the film and rather in spite of JG. Not that I thought he did anything wrong, per se, I just didn't think he was terribly well cast and that the film could have been even better with a more charismatic central performance. And I thought he was appallingly badly cast in that "Prince of Persia" nonsense. But I do think he's good. I just think he's a better actor, and more of a supporting character actor, than he is a charismatic lead as such. BC isn't exactly conventional leading man material either, of course, but he does have the silly level of charisma on screen.
My only quibble with this new project is that the wording re the JG character being "drawn into" the plans/machinations of the supposed BC character sounds more like the JG character is really the main protagonist. That's only supposition, of course, but it is the way that sort of scenario usually works. Much as how Hiddleston was the "lead" compare to Hugh Laurie in "The Night Manager" (although TV comparison) and as per innumerable others. Blind presumption still, but comes with that niggle for me. Other than that, though, I can't help but think the script must be pretty good or it wouldn't be Luca Guadagnino's next project at all. Given the reception that "Call Me By Your Name" is getting, he must be white hot at the moment. And if this is his choice for his next project, then one has to presume it is really good. Alternatively, as also previously mentioned, it can't be discounted that it might also be gay themed, if he's wanting to work that as an agenda).

It is very possible. I don't really care if BC is lead or supporting although I hope he has more than 15 min of screen. I think Nightcrawler is kind of overrated but JG's acting was outstanding.

It sounds like JG will play the everyday man audiences can identify with and BC the more complex probably mysterious role. That's understandable if we consider the charisma factor you mentioned in you post. But yes, I hope he has enough screen time. I mentioned The Third Man and we all know the "charismatic lead" played by Orson Wells is there just for a few minutes even if it feels he is the star!
EDITED: also I remember an interview with Guadagnino in which he said he reads a lot of scripts and that he absolutely hates the conventional typical ones so I guess this is not the typical script and maybe some of the elements wouldn't be so obvious as we think would be.

I liked Night Crawler and thought JG was perfect in it, even if I don't like him that much. He is an excellent actor but his appareance is a bit creepy to me. Of course, it is just a subjective feeling. On the whole, seems an exciting project, but I need BC to be the protagonist or at least to have a good chunk of screen time!
