I think they often shoot films in places other than where they are set. As I've mentioned before, my own Canadian city has stood in for many American locations - usually "gritty" types of places. And I once worked in a nearby small town whose claim to fame was being 18th-century Vienna in a big Hollywood movie!

The concept that Kenya would be a good match for the Karelian/Finnish/Russian border is funny though! There have certainly been better stand-in locations than that.
I think Sri Lanka standing in for Rio does sound surprising, but one presumes that there must be something there that's a good match for what they want.

I'm not an expert in Sri Lanka but there are some luxury beaches there and I guess they are full of foreigners from all over the world so maybe that would work! It still sounds weird but it wouldn't be the first time a very random city stands for another!
There is also the possibility they changed the location within the story but the change should had been very radical to go from Brazil to Sri Lanka! At least the location is not that relevant to the story but then why to call the movie Rio? Also if that's the case why they still calling it Rio and not Weligama or something (Yes, I googled Sri Lanka cities!)

How cool that this is not a franchise movie and that it seems Luca Guadagnino like to openly talk about his projects? We just have to wait to next award season for him to be everywhere promoting Call me by your name!

As I've mentioned before, my own Canadian city has stood in for many American locations Yes, there are many places in the US/Canada that regularly stand in for (other) American locations. Isn't there like a Fake York in LA? But in my opinion it's a bit different. You can even shoot a street scene that's supposed to take place in the US in Canada, because the people around are generally of the right look and speak the right language. The people of Sri Lanka are the wrong ethnicity and speak the wrong language in comparison to Brazilians. So they'll basically have to fly in all the extras too, whereas if you shoot a movie set in New York in Toronto, you can use the local people of Toronto in crowd scenes. Seems like a huge hassle. The concept that Kenya would be a good match for the Karelian/Finnish/Russian border is funny though! There have certainly been better stand-in locations than that. Yeah, in addition to the setting the actors and extras were locals so they couldn't even speak Finnish which prompted the whole movie being made in English. People remain confused over the whole thing lol, some people think it was actually some obscure social study to gauge how the public would react to such a depiction of events that are so integral to Finnish history (the titular Marshal is like our Lincoln in terms of esteem) and not a movie to be taken seriously at all, some people think it's supposed to be satire on how a production company will green-light anything cheaply done that has a certain person or subject attached to it. It's quite clever if it's the last one, but no one has really come forth to say one thing or another. So mystery it shall remain! All that we know, it's that it isn't a good movie if it's supposed to be a serious period piece drama.

It does seem like a very odd substitution. The ethnicities are so different. Both places have distinctive architecture and landscapes, too. Maybe most of the scenes are shot indoors, but, from what I can tell, spectacular views of Sugarloaf are almost inescapable.

I don't know about Sri Lanka but I have been in luxury beaches in Mexico and it's amazing how you almost don't see Mexicans at all! Even in the hotel I was staying there were a few Mexicans employees but a lot of the workers were actually young Americans, Europeans and South Americans. The concierge was a German guy! I remember I said to one of the few Mexicans who worked there that it was sad that more Mexicans don't enjoy of these beautiful natural places. He was surprised because he thought I was from Spain! (A local vendor thought my sister was American because she dyed her hair blonde in another occasion!). My point is luxury places are full of foreigners and probably that's the case with the Sri Lanka places they could be planning to use for a film about rich people. And sometimes it's cheaper to export a few actors than shooting in the real place. Or it could end like Amos Gitai's Kendma in which the British soldiers in early Israel sounded suspiciously like American tourists! (And it was film in the right place!).
I agreed it sounds crazy and the result could be weird but it's not the first time and sometimes even when the result is weird it could work depending of the nature of the movie: the scenes of famous streets in NYC in Eyes Wide Shot were actually shot in UK studios. I remember a critic saying it was very surreal but that actually worked in favor of the movie because it was about twisted dreams and subconscious desires. It wasn't the real New York City but New York City in a dream.
We will see!

Yesterday I finally watched A Bigger Splash and, Rio really NEEDS to happen!
Again a visually beautiful movie about rich frivolous people that works more like a character study than a thriller but the thriller elements work in the sense that they seem more symbolic than anything. Guadagnino seem more mature and in control here than in I am Love, which it's logic because this is a more recent movie, but both are wonderful movies with a very particular directing style.
I doubt but he would do it but he would work as Melrose director, especially for the first book.

I forgot: Guadagnino put a Chavela Vargas song in A Bigger Splash! Silly Ralph Fiennes calls the song, "shit" but still! I now want a movie with BC directed by Guadagnino with a Chavela Vargas song in the soundtrack!

Another project for Luca Guadagnino, variety.com/2017/film/news/felicity-jones-swan-lake-luca-guadagnino-1202489132/Apparently it will be distributed by a big studio (they are still selling it), I hope it doesn't affect Rio production! They don't mention dates and suggest there is not a script yet but they tend to always said "he/she will write the script" even when sometimes it's finished. Both The Hollywood Reporter and Tracking Board mention Rio as one of the director next project alongside Suspiria. Also I remember an interview in which Guadagnino criticized directors who do too much movies in a short time. LOL. If Disney is in the mix according to Tracking Board then we can actually see a Guadagnino movie without nudes?!!!!! It's a tent pole which it's in itself something new for the director!
