The May 25 issue of Entertainment Weekly has a mention and photo of Benedict. In an article listing the movies of Ian McEwan, they include The Child in Time (and also Atonement)

When I saw him on the cover, I thought it was about the shed. Now I'm disappointed!!! 😉 It's a tabloid and it's an incredible story so who knows... The Mirror said it was last year: www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/benedict-cumberbatch-hailed-superhero-after-12636019I thought The Daily Mail published something but it was just a columnist making fun of him because he is now vegan and, you know, made speeches about Syrian refugees during his Hamlet run. So normal stuff!

One of the comments to the article says that it was a PR stunt for his show because it's too much of a coincidence that this all took place near Baker Street. Ha! That Benedict will stop at nothing to bring attention to a tv show that's off the air and might not return!

I think the photo and the contact telephone at the end of the article suggest the story was sold/reported by the Uber driver. That would explain why it was published until now.
At least three newspapers confirmed it with the police and apparently The Sun talked with BC or somehow got a quote by him!

Brave of him and all that but he maybe should be a tad more cautious now he has a family to think of. He could well have got seriously injured taking on four thugs like that Maybe better to have called the police. They would respond v quickly in that Location as there’s always a police presence in central London these days.
