I think people just used to look older in pictures. My aunt showed me a black-and-white picture of some little old ladies once, and asked me how old I thought they were. I thought they were in their 70's or 80's. But in fact, they were only in their 40's!

Yes, I understand. I've seen pictures of my great-grandparents and they were very young (in their teens) and looked older. But in this case DJ was born in 1972 (I had to look) so if he was 16, that picture was taken just in 1988/1989. Who took B&W pictures at 80's? And who used that moustache at 16 in the 80's? Moustaches from 1987, 1985, 1985:

High-school yearbook pictures were in b&w when I was in school. We had some colour pictures in there too, but the student pictures weren't. Colour pictures would have made the yearbook really expensive.
I'm sure times have changed now and they have cheaper ways to produce yearbooks. Or maybe yearbooks don't exist anymore - who knows! Maybe these days the students just go around taking selfies with their classmates.
I feel so old!

They still make yearbooks, and one of the best things is that nowadays they include pictures of helper dogs! Too cute!

Oh! Here we don't have yearbooks, just a picture of the group. Anyway, the moustache was pretty weird for a 16 yo.
