Queen Zod said: I hate it but it effects my discussing my enjoyment sometimes too (not my actual enjoyment - nothing could touch that). I really was thrilled with Sherlock and then I went to a discussion group and all I saw was complaints and moaning about this and that, I felt almost guilty posting that I loved it. When I finally did say how I felt, I got replies saying that I shouldn't be in the discussion thread if all I was going to say was how I loved it. There were other responses hinting that unless you were critical of it you really weren't looking at it with an analytical eye (the old argument of "seeing" all the Johnlock symbolism showed that you really appreciated all the "details" of the show - otherwise you are just a "casual" viewer who watches it in a very shallow fashion - Bollocks!). As if the only legitimate way of viewing it was to tear it apart from bow to stern (to truly love the show you have to hate Season 3 and/or 4 and declare them a "disaster"!!!).
And your analogy about going into someone's house and bitching about their decor. That's why I finally left that forum - it was llike spending time with a chronic grump. I realise that everyone has a right to air their personal feelings about what they didn't like about something, but when it gets to the point that the complaints out number the enjoyment that's when I felt it was not the discussion group for me. And the bitching about S4 seem particularly sour and lopsided - a lot of it stems from the agressive Johnlockers not getting what they wanted, so they have complained endlessly about almost every aspect of the show - M&G, Arwel J., the budget, the writing, the directors, the characters, even the slightest most insignificant details. The thing about that skull poster is kind of typical of the level of rancor that has become predominant after S4 - it seems like such a tiny molehill and yet the posts about this light behind the poster being a different colour in a couple of the episodes are mountainous to say the least!
Leaves me just scratching my head. Who really cares about that sort of stuff???
They come off as a bunch of sourpusses IMO.

I don't know where the elephant stuff comes from. "The elephant in the room" is (and has always been) a metaphor for drug use. I have NEVER heard that phrase used to infer closeted gay people. Maybe I'm just having a grumpy couple of days, but I'm so irritated! Waugh! I've honestly never heard it used as a metaphor for drug use, although I can see how it could be. I have always heard it used to describe an issue or circumstance that is so obvious and undeniable that it can't possibly be ignored, but that no one talks about. In the case of Sherlock, these fanatics are not only seeing an elephant that most people don't see - some might even call it a pink elephant (hallucination) - they're demanding that it get top billing and that we feed it and clean up after it. Ain't gonna happen. I'll leave the shoveling of the imaginary **** to them. I'm sorry all of this is affecting the enjoyment of the show and discussion for some of you. Try to not let it get you down. Not everyone likes the same things or agrees about their meanings. I'm glad to hear no one was openly rude to the creators. Thank god for small wonders.

The elephant stuff started with Arwel tweeting pictures of elephants - ceramic elephants, plastic elephants, stuffed elephants. He would often tweet pictures of interesting things - things that would catch the eye of a set designer. He was just having a bit of fun, but some idiots went nuts and started seeing hidden meaning in those elephants. And when he denied it, they accused him of lying and being part of the conspiracy to keep us from finding out the true story of Sherlock and John. I'm surprised he didn't quit Twitter after that. And he still doesn't tweet as much as he used to.

As Freud might have said "Sometimes an elephant is just an elephant". I shudder to think what Freud would actually have made of all this. I take that back; he would have made a fortune analyzing these people!

From a few of the reports from the con, apparently one or two people did try to get Sue, Mark and Moffat to talk about the lack of gay in the show and the (perceived) queerbaiting. Okay, maybe the jokes went on for too long, but you would think after being told multiple times those super detectives would figure it out. They also made a bunch of fat jokes about Mycroft. Should I be upset my people are being dissed?
Anywho, thanks for the words of support, CCW. I get too worked up sometimes over things that don't matter.

The best thing to do with the TJLC'ers is avoid them just like the septics. I like to laugh at them though so I sometimes read them.

Yep. I totally agree Magda. The best thing to do is laugh at them. Firstly their "theories" are downright hilarious and secondly they're so easy to wind up to fever pitch because none of them have even a nodding acquaintance with a sense of humour and never know when they're being trolled.

It is so ridiculous that a bunch of people STILL have their knickers in a knot about the fact that a TV series didn't pander to their fanfic fantasies.

I haven't seen too much Twitter support for those crazies, thank goodness. I just block them because it's upsetting to see them attacking the talented people who make the show I love. They're not even consistent in their rants. In order to prove that Steven Moffat was a bad writer, one person made a list of every plot detail that he supposedly got wrong. But then that same person said that he or she stopped watching it after S2. So which was it? "I hate your show so much that I'm going to watch each episode over and over so that I can criticize it." Who does that??

I think lots of shows/movies/ book series have extreme/obsessive fans. Dr Who is another show that has lots of them so SM gets a double dose of the "krazies." I honestly don't know what drives people to be so overinvested in a piece of fiction but whatever it is there's lots of them about and social media has exacerbated the situation by giving them global platforms for interactive whingeing!
Imagine if social media had been about when some of the great classics were written. Poor Jane Austen would have been innundated with messages from "Dangleys" berating her for having Mr Darcy marry Miss Bennett when it was obvious from the "signals" in the book that Mr Bingley was his true love. 😀
