I actually skip that episode too. It's not the only one I skip on listening again (and I do listen although not very recently), but BC being absent certainly did make a difference. And I wasn't saying BC wasn't good, of course I'm not, just that it wasn't such a stretch of a role that his particular gift was absolutely necessary for a good job to be done.
Out of curiosity, what are favourite episodes?
The one I used to listen to most often was the one with the goose in the engine. But I giggled my way through such as the one where they went on the training course a fair few times and the orchestra one and the one where the snowman got them stuck overnight in the snow too. I've forgotten the names, off the top of my head, though.

IMHO the best lines and characterization was given to Roger Allan at least at the beginning. After BC become very popular his prissy character grown-up and stopped being just the straight man of Allan's antics. He slightly become like the pathetic little guys Michael Palin used to play. You laughed at his tragedies but you also felt for him. Interesting enough, he is one of the "normal" guys a few people said he doesn't plays. Also it's funny how the BBC recently called him a Millennial icon or something like that because he can't afford a decent house! Nor even a salary! He went from the unskilled guy who his much more knowledgeable and experienced subordinate rightfully made fun of to a somehow heroic but neurotic man with a dream. He was so much loved at the end of it and he suffered so much that they even gave him a fairy tale ending! Literally! He even marries a princess!

Whenever I don't feel like listening to the whole thing, I might start with Abu Dhabi, but I usually go right to Cremona and then Ipswich (the training course) - I think they're hysterical! Ottery St Mary is also a favourite. I could listen to Uskerty (with the goose) on a continuous loop! And then V (Vaduz - Martin meets Teresa), W (Wokingham - Martin goes home), X (Xinzhou - with the snowman) and Y (Yverdon-les-Bains - Martin's job interview) feel so different from the earlier episodes - they are gems and I love them so much! I think maybe it's because by then I had become to attached to these characters and I cared so much about what happened to them. And Zurich is a perfect happy ending for them!
If I'm going to skip episodes, it's usually Boston, Helsinki, Newcastle, and Qikiqtarjuaq. I find that some of the characters are too irritating to listen to!

I have to disagree! I think he brought a lot to the character. He created the character! I usually skip the episode that he's not in (Newcastle?) because it bothers me to hear someone else's voice. It's just not right! We might have one of those situations here where it seems that he's just being himself, but Benedict has never seemed to me to be anything like his character. I concur completely with your comment mllemass. I think BC really did bring a lot of very fine original characterisation to the role he played in CP - just as much as any other role he has played. I think he did a masterful job of showing all sorts of depth to a relatively "simpleton" type character, just with his voice inflections. It really is quite a remarkable job of acting and that role will always be among my most favourite of his (actually I'd rate this role in CP ahead of Sherlock in my favourites list). :-))

That's one of the things about the role that required BC's particular talent. His personal charm can overcome what we dislike about a character (for example, his sympathetic villains like Khan). In the wrong hands Martin Crieff is just irritating and pathetic, the audience doesn't like him, and roots against him because Douglas is funnier. Cabin Pressure is my all-time favorite BC project. If I had to pick a top episode: the one with the paranoid bassoonist.

I think it’s time to re-listen to Cabin Pressure again!

I recently discovered this series and listen to all episodes on a long car trip. Brilliant! Douglas is the best character for me, but Benedict makes Martin very likable. He’s got great comic timing. My favorite episode is probably either the Fizz Buzz episode, the one where they deliver the piano (yellow car) or Le Bear Polar episode.

I haven’t listened to it in a while, but I’m so proud that I knew right away that those episodes are Xinzhou, Ottery St. Mary and Qikiqtarjuaq.
