This is weird! I was just checking the tv listings online, and I saw that The Fifth Estate was just starting. Here's the description: So why wouldn't they include the actual star of the movie?

Maybe they're trying to save him the embarrassment of being associated with such a BORING film. I mean, according to John Oliver, Julian Assange is Uncumberbatchable.
I've tried about a dozen times to get into this film, but o my god. I just can't care. Or, to use the parlance of the day, I can't even!

It was a mediocre movie but not unwatchable in my opinion. It didn't help that at the time Assage still had a lot of fans. I mean he has a few but I think most non-pro-Russian people are at least slightly bothered by his not so hidden agenda. The publication of the collateral video and others documents at the time was without doubt heroic but to negate to protect vulnerable people's names, his not exactly ambiguous relationship with Russia's Putin and his hiding from sexual abuse accusations are all morally wrong.
BC's performance in the last scene is sublime. He is just alone talking directly to the camera being seductive and repellent at the same time. He is the personification of ambiguity. Such a shame the rest of the film wasn't strong enough and that the theme was extremely explosive.

Because it was a mistake? They didn't mention the other star of the movie either - Daniel Brühl (who originally was the actor that attracted me to this movie).
Come to think of it they left off Laura Linney who had a pretty substantial role in it as well. And Alicia Vikander who is rather a hot item as an actress.
Sometimes people doing the write-ups just make really weird decisions.
I realise this is a very unpopular opinion on this board but The Fifth Estate is one of BC's best performances iMO and the movie is a favourite of mine (not just because of BC's performance either). I loved it when I first saw it and always will.

I have it on DVD and only watched it once, but I agree about the last scene. I just now turned to it on tv to watch that scene again, and I had the same thought that I had the first time: why wasn't the whole movie done this way? It could have been entirely of him speaking directly to the camera, telling his story, and then cutting away so we see it acted out. If there had been more scenes of him speaking to us, I think it would have been a much more interesting story.

I wouldn't go as far as claiming it was a great movie, but I liked it, not only because of BC: I found it pretty interesting, because I didn't know that much about Julian Assange and Wikileaks. There were quite a few cliches, but well, The Theory of Everything is all a sugar coated cliche about Hawking and it still won some accolades. I do agree with roverup this is one of the best BC performances: I have watched the film three times and loved the ambiguity he managed to infuse into the character.

I liked it when I saw it in the theater, always thought it was better than reviews led to believe. Of course, Assange is very polarizing and the movie wanted to be even-handed, it was sure to irritate people on both sides.

I thought I would put this reply to sgev in The Fifth Estate thread because at least it would be on topic and not lost “off topic” in TCW thread (which doesn’t seem much about TCW any way at the moment).
I looked for the quote from Cumberbatch where he said the point about thinking that TFE hadn’t got a fair shake in the theatres and the reaction might have been different if more people would have seen it, but I couldn’t find it. Sorry. I remember reading it in an interview that was published quite a bit after that movie came out (I think the interviewer was asking him about a lot of his past films) but unfortunately when I did a search I just got a lot of interviews from when TFE came out. I did look on Cumberbatch web in past interviews from about 2014 and 2015 but couldn’t find it. I will keep my eye out in the coming days but even trying limiting parameters didn’t seem to help zero in on the one I wanted. Very frustrating because I do know I read it somewhere!
If I do ever find the quote I will put it here in this thread.

Yes, I read that one last night in my search but the one I am thinking of was done later - maybe 2014-15???
I remember he said something like that the movie wasn’t give a fair chance because a lot of people had not seen it when he asked them about it (this is just from memory mind you so I don’t know the exact words). The interview wasn’t about TFE at all but somehow this part was about it’s poor reception. I also remember he talked about how he was still proud about it regardless of whether it was a commercial success or not. I’ll keep looking but there are so many interviews to look through - he has done so much and been interviewed so many times!
One side benefit of this search is that I have read a LOT of really good articles about him! I just love reading his interviews! So it isn’t an imposition going through all these - just time consuming! LOL!
