Well, I hoped it could be good and have a good boxoffice. Ehrlich has it as the worst of all the films at TIFF but I don't know if he saw it tonight or on a previous screening. One of the tweets posted by sgev is from a guy from Collider.

Frankly, I didn't say anything at the time because people here loved it, but I was quite taken aback by the trailer. I felt like I couldn't tell anything about the movie, unless it was going to be a music video about Thomas Edison, LOL. A friend of mine, who isn't in the fandom but thinks Benedict is a fantastic actor, called me unsolicited to tell me how awful the trailer was. He was actually angry ...and he studied film and actually worked on some movies years ago.

The only criticism I've seen of the acting was the guy who thought BC and Shannon were scenery chewing, huffing and puffing their way through it or something to that effect. A couple of people have mentioned weak story/writing, but I agree, most are either just saying "bad" without other detail or are mentioning the style specifically.
I'm wondering if it could be like some critics' negative reaction to BC's stage Hamlet, which had the very youth-oriented staging with bright lights, modern music, Hamlet in a rock band t-shirt, etc. Sometimes to much effort to look flashy, cool or youthful leaves viewers thinking they are trying too hard, overshadowing their story, or whatever. I agreed with many of those comments and didn't particularly care for the style of Hamlet myself, but LOVED it overall for BC's amazing performance. So if these TCW viewers are put off by the "Social Network"-ish look, superhero-style editing or whatever, that doesn't mean I won't like it!
I'm wondering why we haven't heard from Mllemass? That seems the most ominous of all!

Free translation: Visually stunning with impossible planes similar to those of Birdman and an enveloping soundtrack for an erratic script. Say goodbye to the Oscar, Harvey.

I loved the trailer, but did think it was stylistically unusual in photography, editing, tone and music which is part of what I liked! But that can work against it, based on people's personal preferences too! I had no trouble telling what the film was about, except the buildup to Tesla, which may have disappointed some who thought he would be a larger part of the story.

BC's accent was a bit off. The comments on youtube were not bad except from those who were expecting a pro-Tesla movie.

I'm wondering why we haven't heard from Mllemass? That seems the most ominous of all! Ben fell on her and then took her out for a late dinner, don't ya know. 😁 Seriously, tho, I'm going to withhold judgment until I see it myself. Everyone likes different things. The trailer looked very powerful to me, and I love historical drama. So, who knows? Some folks on Twitter are having a meltdown, which concerns me. I don't like people to get so over invested in a movie that they're bummed for weeks if it's not as good as they hoped. It might be fabulous. The only way to know is to watch it yourself. And, if Ben has made a not so great movie, is that the end of the world, or even of his career? I don't think so.
