That quote is funny because he was questioning Sir Tom Stoppard who, according to multiple sources, is very STRICT about changing commas to his work! Just watch the BTS's featurette of Terry Gilligan's Brazil in which he practically called the filmmaker "idiot" for not understanding his dialog. In the publicity material for the movie! Lol Also Rupert Everett said he didn't knew how the leads could deal with him because it and the director said they had to kindly removed him from the set a few times because he was over the cast. I imagine he did that in a moment in which the scriptwriter wasn't there! Lol

Stoppard was the writer; it was Susanna White who was the director for PE.
But it’s funny in a small part he’d feel comfortable questioning a line Stoppard wrote.
An interesting takeaway from that anecdote was that even though BC proved him wrong and supported the director and writer, he did it in a way that wasn’t trying to make the guy feel like a dope “oh yes, I worried about the same thing, mate. But going by the book, the scripture got it right, so we’re good!”

Yes, I know! But Stoppard was there a lot of the time giving orders to the actors! That’s why I said it surely was a day he wasn’t there because he isn’t known to take those things lightly! Lol The anecdote surely would be very different!
Anyway, it’s great that BC ended building a strong friendship with Stoppard (remember when he gave his blessing to his marriage from an award podium because he talked with her earlier that day and he totally approved their union!)I remember Everett didn’t seemed to have a great impression of him because his way of protecting his writing.

I'm not sure Fassbender's fans would be happy with this, tho.!
I remember one of them claiming BC was "stealing" roles (he was never offered) from him! Lol
He still has two major movies next with Fincher and Waititi so hopefully he could have a big comeback.

That reminds me of (was it in Ricky Gervais’s “Extras?”), where Ricky is working with Sir Ian on a play and McClellan goes OFF about how acting is pretending. I’ll paraphrase:
“Am I a wizard? No. So what I do is *pretend* that I’m a wizard, and I say, (he demonstrates, loudly and with feeling), ‘none shall pass!’ Do I make up the words as I go along? No. You see, I have a *script* where someone else has written the words and I memorize them! That is how it’s done. Do you see?” And of course Ricky is sitting there nodding his head and trying to pay attention and not be rude because it’s all nonsense and Ian is trying to be very serious teaching this lowly extra about the craft of acting/pretending.
Kind of the opposite of method acting, in a way, but very English. You just do it.
Such a great series!

Extras was great although very cynical like his The Office. I love how different it’s the American version and also Call My Agent from France which it’s not something that Gervais did originally but it’s also about film business and full of cameos except they showed nice versions of the movie stars. It really shows how different are all those cultures but also how famous British actors doesn’t care about showing ugly versions of themselves! Lol
I love that McKellen thinks it would be a great lost not to see BC playing gay characters! The whole quote about straight actors understanding or not gay characters reminded me to The Advocate guy who said BC played the closeted sexuality of Phil Burbank in an extremely genuine and heartbreaking way but kind of threatening him that he would still denounced him if he wins the Oscar! Then moaned about how James Corden was an awful cartoon in a Ryan Murphy movie! It was so bizarre! Why BC is the one to blame for Corden? And more important, why he doesn’t see the irony than the portrait he hates was designed by an actual gay man?! Maybe, just maybe sensitive is not related to “identity” but to talent, heart and intelligence! I guess he was happy that Will Smith won! But smart people doesn’t care too much about the Oscar! 😉

We did it but I was wrong it wasn’t The Advocate but Attitude. It also seems the link to the review isn’t working anymore, benedict-cumberbatch.freeforums.net/post/36882/threadHe was actually asking if it was less offensive if a straight actor was playing a “straight” acting gay character than someone more feminine like Corden in the Ryan Murphy movie (I remember that I read his review of that film and he was very offended by it). I remember the Oscar bit but it’s not in the quote cited in this forum. I guess it could had been someone else but I’m 90% sure it was this review. He thought no one else could had played the part but was angry at him for not being the real thing and kinda “threatened” him with future criticism if he would had won the Oscar! EDITED It’s working now! But no he doesn’t mention the Oscar part and now I’m wondering where I read it? I will try to find it! EDITED 2: As you can see I don’t exactly remember articles like they are! Lol
