Atonement was on tv again last night, and I watched the first half of it. I've always found it interesting that Stephen Moffat thought Benedict would make a good Sherlock after seeing him play Paul Marshall. But really, that "Bite it. You have to bite it." scene is pretty amazing. The look on his face when Lola compliments his shoes! He gets flustered, as though she's flirting with him. So creepy!
Leading up to the "Bite it" part, he's talking to the children about this chocolate bar they're giving to every soldier in the British army. He says they're calling it the "Army Ammo". Lola responds with "Amo, Amas, Amat" - A bit of déjà vu from Sherlock T6T! I wonder if Moffat thought of that way back then!
And, as a bonus, Lola even mentions seeing Hamlet, to which Paul/Benedict responds with "To be or not to be".

I love him in that role! So creepy. Perv. Not my fav movie because I didn't really understand what was so "atoney" about Briony's actions, but boy howdy, I did remember Ben's character. He did so much with that tiny role.
It just occurred to me - he didn't cry in that role!

It just occurred to me - he didn't cry in that role! No he didn't - you're right. Unless there was a deleted scene of him in tears at the news of Lola being raped. Instead of tears, we did get a scene with him wearing an old-timey bathing suit!

Chocolate martinis, a smarmy moustache and an insufferable attitude in addition to that bathing suit! And that great yellow jacket! 😍

Yes, not my favourite movie and it never ceases to amaze me that the film makers needed such a long time to "discover" Benedict, going for McAvoy instead (I mean, com'on people, McAvoy is a very good actor, but he isn't by half as magnetic and unforgettable as Benedict!)I was the same in Starter for 10: McAvoy being the "hero", but Benedict stole the show!

Imo James McAvoy is excellent. I hope that with Split he gets more attention.
Didn't he started younger than BC?
I remember him in Children of Dune.
In Atonement he was very good and looked very handsome.
Benedict looked handsome but very creepy. The scene with the girl and the two boys was very disturbing. I initially thought he was after the boys.
That scene stayed with me a long time, the movie advanced but I was still thinking of it.
Saorse Ronan was fantastic and I liked Keira very much.
I think it was a very good movie. I agree that the atonement never happened.

You make a good point about it seeming like Paul Marshall was after the two boys in that scene. He did go out of his way to try to dazzle them with the news of owning a chocolate factory, but they remained unimpressed.
I like James McAvoy. He's terrific in Split, he's handsome, and he's been very charming in interviews. I'm sure I've made this comment before, but I really think his height prevents him from getting those big leading-man roles. As long as he could get away with playing a "student" type of character, his height didn't matter too much. Even Tom Cruise (who's older than I am) eventually had to stop pretending he was in his 20's - although he dragged it out far too long.
I remember one of the Starter for 10 interviews where Benedict talks about how James McAvoy was going to be a huge star because of his looks and talent - obviously thinking it couldn't happen to him.

I’ve never seen this before! I forgot that they worked together in Atonement, too.

I can’t even look at him as Paul Marshall without shuddering, lol. Creep. I think it’s the douchy moustache.

Atonement is on tv again. I have to watch Benedict’s part, then I’ll switch to something else. I like knowing that this was the role that got him Sherlock!
