I have seen several movies lately, some of which will probably be up for Oscars: The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Three Billboards, and Ladybird.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer - I suppose it was well done, but I didn’t like it. I think my dislike is just a matter of personal taste. The movie is very allegorical in a way that I found both heavy-handed and obscure at the same. Very odd. Allegory is not something I care for much. The acting was excellent.
Three Billboards - I’m not writing out the whole title!!! - I liked it, but was a little disappointed. Frances McDormand is one of my favorite 2 or 3 actresses and she does not disappoint. She’s brilliant. I love her. Woody Harrelson is very good, too. My main problem is that the comedy didn’t always jibe with the setting. Some of the characters - especially Sam Rockwell’s - were bumbling, incompetent, and cartoonish in ways that didn’t seem authentic to small Midwestern towns. It wasn’t awful, just a little grating.
Ladybird - Loved it. I’m not usually drawn to coming of age stories, but this one was very good. The script is excellent. The cinematography doesn’t break any new ground or call attention to itself, but the movie doesn’t call for that. Saoirse Ronan is, of course, brilliant. She is seemlessly that character. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite actresses, too. I don’t think it’s the kind of performance that usually wins awards, but I could be wrong. Laurie Metcalf, Tracey Letts, and most of the cast are wonderful, too.

I don't know what is happening here but except for the movies I already commented on, none of the movies which are winning awards have a release date yet.
Worse, I just saw that Call Me By Your Name had two sessions in October in a kind of festival and I didn't find out till now because I was working nonstop.
Now I don't know when I'll catch it.

I went to see The Florida Project last night and loved it! It was filmed using almost entirely non-professional actors and they were amazing. The director clearly has a gift for eliciting naturalistic performances from people with little experience in front of the camera. The little girl who plays the lead is just incredible!
I don’t know if many people like this kind of film - very ‘slice of life’, observational, and meandering at first, but very entertaining. The plot eventually reveals itself.
I love a Willem Dafoe and he’s amazing in this.

Andy Serkis seems lovely. The actress couldn't pronounce some names. Also she may be needing glasses. I still have to see some of the movies but till now I didn't adore any of them. I like that Dunkirk got so many noms because visually is incredible. Same for Blade Runner 2049.

I haven't seen any of these movies! In past years, our local artsy theatre would have shown most of them, but it's under renovation this year. And I really wasn't interested enough in these movies to go see them at the multiplex. I did see Loving Vincent, though, which is nominated for Animated film.

Poor lady, she knew it wasn't going well and she even asked Serkis whether he would read the BP nominees, he should have listened. Very happy Greta Gerwig was nominated for best directing! I really like her. I'm happy Nolan got a nomination too, he's one of those directors who have been snubbed a lot for directing the "wrong kind" of films so you'd figure he was due a nod for going the usual World War II film Oscar route...

I didn't like much Lady Bird but perhaps it is because I read so much about how good it was that when I watched it I just found it meh. I found the character a bit annoying. Saoirse is such a good actress. She also looks incredible on the still from her next movie.

There was a whole Twitter thing where they compared Lady Bird to an episode of Gilmore Girls. They went into great detail pointing out the similarities, from the characters and storyline, to the dialogue.
As I think I've mentioned before, I saw a movie on tv when I was little that sounds exactly like the story in The Shape of Water. I've searched everywhere for it, and I've asked everyone I know about it, but no one seems to remember it but me. I keep waiting for Guillermo del Toro to give an interview where he says that he was inspired by an old Canadian TV movie (which is fine!), but no. He says the idea came out of his head.
