Dan and I have watched Lady Bird, Darkest Hour and Three Billboards so far. Loved all three.
Tonight we are watching Mudbound and next week we are traveling to see our friends and watch The Post with them (especially relevant because Dan and our friend MJ both were newspaper reporters/editors for many years before retiring).
We have tried to get Dunkirk (we both love anything relating to WWII) but haven’t been successful yet. We will keep trying!
As for the other films, I really want to see the Shape of Water and Call Me By Your Name because of the directors of each.
And we will get around to seeing a lot of the others as well if time permits.

Based in the reviews, it’s a nice lineup. More perplexing reactions: people being angry because Wonder Woman is not nominated!

We just saw Mudbound tonight and I really think it is an amazing film! My favourite of all the ones I have seen so far. Really, really powerful movie. I noticed one of the companies associated with its production was Black Bear Productions the same company that produced The Imitation Game.

Based in the reviews, it’s a nice lineup. More perplexing reactions: people being angry because Wonder Woman is not nominated! I'm quite surprised it was shut out. I mean Guardians of the Galaxy 2 got a nomination and there was nothing special about that film... I think Wonder Woman could easily have gotten in in something like visual effects (like that GoTG 2 spot) or sound editing. But those nominations are really uninspiring anyways. I mean honestly, The Last Jedi for best original score?? Star Wars inarguably has one of the best and/or most famous scores of all time but how can the Academy justify calling it "original" anymore since it has really been 90% the same since 1977? Also I'm really getting bored with Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington and Daniel Day-Lewis. It's so boring that 3 acting spots this year were reserved for actors who get nominated for basically showing up on set. I'm not saying they're not good, they are, but spread the love a bit eh...

This year was his much-publicized retirement from acting, so a win is a pretty sure bet, I'd say.

Yes, probably WW deserved a few technical nominations. My issue is with the few people who make it sounds or are suggesting it deserved to be in the main categories.
I really think it's counterproductive to any pro women in entertainment business campaign. Demanding for awards for a genre movie of the kind is almost never recognized just because it's by women feeds the wrong narrative. The movie was a major blockbuster hit so it doesn't need any special favor by an award that's not that influencing anyway. Things doesn't change just because Oscars. The change needs to be systematic to really work.

This year was his much-publicized retirement from acting, so a win is a pretty sure bet, I'd say. I think Gary Oldman is the favorite. I think he will win at least something ugly happens: he is the most "vulnerable" for a dirty campaign. Not just because is the favorite but because even when he is reportedly reformed he had a very questionable past. Also it seems he is a Conservative. Some people think it affected it when he was a possibility for an earlier Oscar for The Contender. Also he didn't campaigned and openly criticized his director and liberal co-workers.

No, you aren’t saying they aren’t good, but what you seem to be suggesting is that even if they do an absolutely knock-out performance this year they shouldn’t be nominated because... they have been nominated too many times? You may be bored with them but I do think they are pretty much acknowledged as top-notch performers who have earned their kudos and that just may be the reason why they get nominated so much?
But I do see your point and perhaps the Oscars should have a Newcomer Award for up and coming actors/directors/etc.?? That would get exposure for the less experienced in their respective categories.
And yes, there have been incidences when well known stars get noms on their past reputations alone, but until I see their current performances I don’t want to say that they don’t deserve this year’s noms. I am going to see MS soon in The Post - so I will be able to judge her performance in this after viewing it. I have heard some really good things about this film. And the same for DW’s performance in his flick. Funny though I haven’t even heard of DDL’s film - I’ll have to queue this up in my favourites and give it a go - the premise sounded interesting.

That stupid Guardian has an article explaining why some movies didn't get Oscar nominations, and they've included The Current War. How ridiculous! It sounds like they just wanted to be able to say nasty things about it, quoting The Hollywood Reporter writer who called it boring. At the end, they added that it hasn't been released yet, but when it is, no one will want to see it.
