I do understand the point everyone is making - really! But just because something is historically accurate doesn’t mean it belongs in entertainment. I don’t want to see movies set in the 1950s with women as subservient and only there to serve men, even if that was the reality back then. Unless, of course, the movie is dealing with the issue of gender roles in the 1950s. And yes, if the movie is about a real person, the casting would have to make sense to the audience.
And about 20 years ago, libraries here started removing children’s books written before a certain year. I remember it because they would sell those discarded books to the public. Schools did so as well. They included both fiction and non-fiction books. The fiction books, even classic stories, were considered outdated mainly because of the illustrations. And non-fiction had to now use inclusive language - like those history textbooks I already mentioned. I remember buying a big book about fish at one of the library sales, and I still wonder why it had been discarded. But because of these rules for children’s books, we have a generation of kids who have grown up seeing illustrations of scientists and doctors and astronauts that are girls!
I’m all for the new Bafta rules for movies. People are still free to make any kind of movie they want, but those movies might not be eligible to win a Bafta. It will be interesting to see how it works out!

They don't even have the rules yet. And that's another problem who will decide what is right and what is wrong for everyone else? After all those TV shows aren't aimed to little kids so why we should be treated like that?
Again, if they really try to implement something like that they will be ones who will become obsolete. We all will know they aren't awarded the best but the most politically acceptable.

I suppose there could be a compromise and create a new Bafta film category “Most Diverse Cast“. That way, filmmakers have the option of meeting the diverse-film requirements if they want, and it might be an incentive to filmmakers who had never considered it before.
The way it is now, not all movies qualify for all the Oscars, either. There are always movies without a female lead (or, less common, without a male lead), so they could never get those nominations. And there are movies without special effects or songs - and movies aren’t necessarily better if they do have those things.

Yep. I said before than an award for diversity should be a good idea but imposing quota without considering context, intention or especially quality, no.
Diversity is important but the ones who should implement actions are producers and they should open doors to other visions not to censor old ones. It's alright if organizations try to pressure them but I don't think it's good idea to let award committees changing the concept of what it's good or not based in morality instead of quality. It just won't work!

It’s an interesting interview/article, even if there isn’t anything very new in it.
When he was asked about interacting with fans all over the world, he was clearly referring to to us here! Ha!

He saved us the public embarrassment by not using our names, lol. B/c he knows each of us personally. Ooo, brb, it’s almost time for my Sunday evening Skype call with him. 🤣

That is funny, because I dreamed last night I was in a huge mob of fans who were literally following him everywhere. He would come out in different Scooby Doo-esque disguises trying to give us the slip, but it didn't work because we recognized all of his familiar hats, etc. I'm sure it doesn't mean anything.

Some days I feel for him and his lack of privacy. He’s such a good egg about it, tho. 🥺
