Hawking is also available on Amazon Prime. I watch it fairly regularly, ‘cos it’s one of my favorites. Ben is just so good in it! His terror on finding out what’s wrong with him, his arrogance in confronting Hoyle, his perfect physicality, those two adorable guys picking up their Nobel Prize, and of course, the bathing scenes. I love the science bits (not that I understand it) but it’s explained well enough that a doofus like me can begin to understand, his joy on the platform figuring out the past is pear shaped, lol, it’s all so good. It’s a small film, but lovely. Fascinating film. ER looks more like SH, but "Hawking" is the better film. I watched it the other day.

I wound up rewatching Hawking tonight. I hadn’t seen it for several years. After seeing BC’s performance in The Power of the Dog, it was really interesting to go back nearly 20 years for a very different role.
It was amazing to see how commanding he was in that role, so far back. The physicality and and energy of Hawking is so far removed from Phil Burbank it’s hard to believe they were played by the same actor. What is consistent is the charisma and sense of each character’s intelligence, presence contrasted with their vulnerability. You can see more of BC’s performance tics way back when; he was incredibly skilled then, but has much more fluidity and skill, nuance now.
I had forgotten Alice Eve was in the cast, along with other people he has costarred with multiple times. (For example Anastasia Hille, who played Gertrude in BC’s Hamlet, plays the nurse who cares for Hawking in his hospital admission at 21, Phoebe Nicholls who plays Hawking’s mum, plays Mrs Wain in TELoLW, Bertie Carvell and other actors show up in Sherlock),
And that scene at the train station, when Hawking calls out to Roger Pemrose, draws the diagram in chalk on the pavement “the past is pear-shaped!” and proclaims “Bang!” still gives me chills no matter how many times I’ve seen it.
