T. Holland looks so sweet, a little overwhelmed, but he's not used to this yet. BC looks more "been here, done this, please just hand those flowers to Karon who is already carrying ten things." LOL He looks great today though!

Poor Benedict! He now has some angry tweeters accusing him of racism for his little bow at the airport. But then there are many saying that the bow is not racist, even if it isn't actually part of their culture. Someone tweeted photos of other celebrities doing the same thing, so it seems to be a thing that famous people do who don't know any better. And then someone said something like "He is welcome to come to my country any time and greet us any way he wants!" I think his fans there are worried that he won't ever want to go back there if he's being criticized like this.

They don't bow there? Someone needs to tell my son's taekwondo master. He is Korean, and has everyone bow in greeting, parting, and to the Korean flag.

I see a few tweets but I'm sure it's just one of those storm in a teacup Twitter thing. Anyone of us saw anything wrong with the salute so or most of us are "racist" or it's just a cultural thing that anyone without an agenda can see it's well-meaning even if ignore some local etiquette. The solution is to explain it to people who doesn't know. Calling them "racist" is NOT. They don't bow there? Someone needs to tell my son's taekwondo master. He is Korean, and has everyone bow in greeting, parting, and to the Korean flag. I think the problem was not the bow but that he did that Buddhist gesture with his hands. As someone pointed out he kind of practice Buddhism (at least "philosophical") so he is much more familiar with that salute that with any local variation.

Oh, I see. Hopefully someone will tell him, and he can do it correctly for his events there. Or else just wave, it's pretty hard to do that the wrong way!
Our taekwondo master has the students fold one hand over the other one closed in a fist?

I see absolutely nothing wrong with his bow, even if they don’t do it that way in Korea. It’s a namaste gesture, greeting the god in others from the god in you. It’s a gesture of honor and respect. Wtf? How is that possibly, in any permutation of the word, racist? He doesn’t have to adjust his greeting for different cultures. I am so sick of this c.r.a.p.

I don't know what's acceptable or not, but the people on Twitter who live in that culture couldn't even come to an agreement, so it can't be that simple. I'm sure we can all agree that he intended to be polite and respectful, and not offensive.
A while back, our prime minister went to India with his family. They arrived in traditional Indian clothing and changed into different outfits during their time there. The first tweets about it were very kind: they explained that people don't really dress that way there (and they certainly would never expect non-Indians to dress that way), but they were so flattered and touched that this Canadian family had gone to the trouble of researching Indian traditions. Later tweets weren't so kind, though! They thought the PM was making fun of Indian traditions, not honouring them. Our own press said that his visit was a huge embarrassment to Canada.

I feel things have changed a lot just recently, with the advent of "cultural appropriation." Nobody complained when BC wore a Japanese robe during STID promotion, only a few short years ago. Maybe it was different because they gave it to him. I think it's nice when people try to reach out in keeping with another culture's traditions, but some people feel it is presumptuous or a mockery, I guess. The context sometimes gets lost, especially on the internet and with people already looking to criticize.

I can’t believe that even some “twitter” people would be having a snit-fit about Ben’s greeting bow. Well, on second thought maybe it isn’t that hard to believe!
I googled it (having never been in Korea) and it seems that bowing is indeed done routinely as a sign of respect in that county and the hand in a prayer formation is also done if the person doing it is of the Buddhist persuasion (which as has been noted BC is aligned with in a philosophical way). So it isn’t a big deal at all and in my mind only people outright looking for “problems” would want to make more of this than is warranted (which is no problem at all, to be honest). Whoever started this “racist” crap certainly will end up with egg all over their smug faces because it is so easy to see it is all bullshit!
As for the Indian “thing” with our PM... all that faux outrage was manufactured by right-wing assholes who wanted Trudeau to look bad (any beat to death in conservative rags like The National Post and Maclean’s, and hard-liner columnists). Those types are livid that Trudeau is a “rock star” among world politicians and are desperately looking for anything to bring him down a peg or two!
:-))
