I would understand if someone had had similar experiences themselves or with friends and family and felt triggered by it. But not giving the show a chance because it is depressing - wow. Not everything can be fun and rainbows and apart from that it has many funny and satirical moments. Her loss, I would say.

The thing is, it’s not depressing! It’s astute, sharp, clever, funny, and devastating, but not exactly depressing. But, some folks only want unicorns & rainbows.

I didn't find it depressing at all either. Poignant certainly. Funny in many places. Moving and thoughtful definitely.
For something to be depressing to me it would have to offer no glimmer of hope. Both the books and the series version offer that hope, as a process and a goal, for the protagonist by the end. It was uplifting.

I found that particular book difficult to follow until I realized it was supposed to have a scattered plot to reflect the stream-of-consciousness of a drug addict’s mind. Watching it wasn’t a problem at all after having read it. But that was the joy of those novels/episodes! Each had a different tone and feel.
