Cumberbatch, who would join Fred Astaire, Hume Cronyn, Peter Falk, Hal Holbrook, Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino and James Woods as the category’s two-time champs, is fifth in our overall odds. But he’s the top choice of Expert Anne Thompson (IndieWire) and Editors Marcus James Dixon and Chris Beachum.
You’d be a fool to underestimate Cumberbatch even though “Patrick Melrose” just premiered and didn’t exactly light the world on fire in the ratings (a Saturday timeslot doesn’t help). An Emmy favorite, he would tie Laurence Olivier with six nominations in the category this year (only Holbrook has more, with seven) and has earned raves for his turn as the title character, a hedonistic playboy addict, the type of bait-y role the Emmys love. The premiere was basically a showcase episode for Cumberbatch, as Patrick battled his demons, and if that’s all voters watch to check out the five-part limited series, which is based on a book series, then he’s in good stead for a nomination and a win.
Darren Criss (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”) currently leads our odds, but he’s not quite a sure thing like Courtney B. Vance was for the “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”) two years ago. Pacino (“Paterno”), Kyle MacLachlan (“Twin Peaks”) and Michael B. Jordan (“Fahrenheit 451”) are all ahead of Cumberbatch at the moment, but don’t be surprised if Cumberbatch overtakes them in the coming weeks.

This is funny! I don't know if BC will win or not but it seems to me these people are feeling threatened. The last time he and Sherlock "stole" the awards to their favorites there were EVEN accusations of homophobia on their forum!!!! Considering that the team behind The Assassination of... is the same that did The Normal Heart I can see a similar hysteria!
By the way, Michael B. Jordan's Fahrenheit 451 early reviews aren't very good.
