Just wanted to add that this morning I found out that Anthony Hopkins won the BAFTA for best actor for his work in The Father and after seeing it, I couldn't agree more with that selection. His performance knocked it out of the park IMO.

I just finished Tik Tik Boom. It was okay. It’s not really my type of movie musical and everyone seemed a little over the top, a little too eager like they do on the stage to sell it at long distance so I guess it was purposeful but it seemed an odd choice for a film because the camera does the closeup so you don’t have to emote quite so much. Andrew Garfield was pretty amazing - I didn’t know he could sing so well! But, not really my kind of musical. So I’m watching White Christmas as a palate cleanser. 😂

My thoughts exactly. LMM obviously knows how to direct for the stage, but not so much for the camera - everyone was too big and at 100% all the time, acting for the back row. Garfield's a great performer (I *LOVED* him in Angels in America), but I read a very good comment that sums up my issue with his performance: he goes through the full emotional range within the first fifteen minutes, so when we get to the actual climax, his emotional reactions are already underwhelming (and a little annoying) to us. But you're damn right, he can sing!

Being The Ricardos just became available, anyone else watch it? I found it quite cold and joyless. And yes, the central conflict was just not enough to carry the movie through. It's weird how much I agree with the reviews - Nicole is great with the dramatic moments (as is Bardem) but as soon as she has to be Lucy Ricardo it just becomes awkward. After I finished the movie I put on some I Love Lucy clips from Youtube to laugh at. It's incredible how much Sorkin "didn't get" it, there really is no love in the movie for the series itself.

I saw this trailer multiple times in the theater and every time, I was popped out of the movie by how she kind of looks like Lucy, but her eyes are just a bit too close together for Lucy when looked at straight on, so I would inevitably think "oh, it is Nicole playing Lucy." Since I really loved the show as a kid, I am not sure I could watch this - mostly because I was devastated to learn that their marriage was rocky (remember, I was a kid and I was watching reruns, but still - devastated). I just don't want to ruin those old feelings of watching that show and laughing.

Oh yeah, I don’t think you’ll enjoy it then. The note the movie ends on with regards to their marriage is kind of depressing.

I watched it last night and thought it was kind of a mess! There were a few moments that sparkled and I wanted more of those, but they were too ephemeral. NK seemed very wrong for Lucy, outside of the fact she got the voice right. Kidman is an ice goddess (her face now made immobile by plastic surgery), and Lucy was warm, rambunctious, fluid, and totally down to earth. So that was awkward. I thought JB got Desi a lot better, at least the big, open part of him (can’t speak to the accent b/c I’m ignorant of those things). The real standout for me with one or two juicy scenes was JK Simmons, who is perfection in everything he does.
All the pilikia between the writers and producers was just filler, imo, and I didn’t understand the purpose of having the interview (modern) bits in there mucking with the timeline. Everything kind of limped along until the big, happy-ish ending which felt weird and Spielberg levels of contrived.
It’s too bad because I wanted to like it very much. I also remember watching her when I was young and laughing my head off. This had none of the joy, spark, spontaneity, or wit that the real Lucy had.

This past weekend I watched Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy again and Fellini's 8 1/2 that I haven't seen before. It is unbelievable how much I like TTSS. Isn't it in some way similar to TPOTD? They're both very cinematic, you need to pay attention to details, excellent script, direction, cinematography, acting. Same reactions from some people who think they're too slow, that are confused or don't follow the story. Also they have some themes in common: people who are alone, who can't be themselves, how Karla/Haydon manipulated Smiley and the others using Smiley's love for his wife and making them believe that they were getting what they wanted. Karla=Peter Colin Firth is so good in this movie. And, as I watched Otto e mezzo right after (I wanted to watch TTSS again but I've been waiting to watch this movie for some time) I realized that Colin Firth ressembles Marcello Mastroianni!

We saw Being the Ricardos ladt night and were entertained by it. It wasn't anywhere near a great movie but I had very low expectations so I was pleasantly surprised at how much I was engaged with the story.
When I watched the trailer I thought it looked very stilted and I wasn't impressed with Nicole Kidman's rendition of Lucy, but as I watched the actual movie I was really impressed with how she captured the essence of the woman.
And I liked the ending because it didn't sugarcoat anything and showed that LB wasn't a fool and knew her husband was a philanderer. Still she respected his business acumen and I found out that even after they divorced they remained on friendly terms.
Tonight we're going to watch Don't Look Up (I think it's available today).

I just watched Being the Ricardos. It’s indeed entertaining but yes, not a great film. The talking heads is a huge mistake! It made it feel like a docudrama but with A list actors. Why Sorkin did that? I would say that Chicago 8 was much less stiff and more cinema friendly than comparing to this! It’s not like a docudrama, it’s a docudrama!
I don’t think I have ever watched I love Lucy. There were a lot of old American sitcoms repetitions on TV when I was a kid but they were all in color. Still, I know who she is and how hyper expressive she was as a comedian and I can imagine how that could be a huge problem for people more familiar with her when they see Nicole Kidman playing her. Poor Kidman but her face is now the opposite of expressive. She does a good job as an actress but the “funny” parts are an issue even when her voice seems good. Javier Bardem and JK Simmons are great.
Also according to the film, Lucy was a pretty nasty lady, doesn’t? For moments, it wasn’t clear why people could forgive her so easily! Maybe the explanation is that she was the star of the show and let her being abusive because their jobs depended of her! Desi was an unfaithful bastard but it’s clear he was charismatic and seductive. Anyway, I love Bardem!
