What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the name Elvis?

Besides the obvious... Stojko - the Canadian figure skater. The only other Elivis I know of is Elvis Costello the musician who married one of my favourite singers Diana Krall.

Okay, but not who you think of. What do you think of regarding Presley when you hear his name?

Bubba ho-tep.
But, seriously, because of the new movie, all I can think is Austin Butler because that was being pushed so hard. He really wants that Oscar.
edit: I also picture him dying on the toilet. For some reason, he is also wearing all those gold chains and the white outfit while sitting on the shitter. (That's me: classy). And, having a thing for really young girls.
edit 2: I bet this is really not what you are getting at, is it? Should I say "King of Rock and Roll?" "Cultural Icon?" "Wow he was good looking in that beach movie?"

I am officially divorcing both of you.
I just watched “it,” meaning the new Elvis movie and I’m trying very hard not to be angry. I have issues with Luhrman at the best of times, but outside of Butler’s commendable (but not without its flaws), performance, he really missed the boat. It should have been named Elvis: the Woobification.
Here’s a quote I found helpful from a user review on IMDB: “Luhrmann is never one to use a nutcracker when there is a sledgehammer he can bang an idea a few times with until you get it. That's my point. This is not really an Elvis movie. It is a Tom Parker movie that wishes it was an Elvis movie. I am not sure you can be that dark and cynical about Elvis life and hope to get away with it considering what baggage the typical audience are likely to bring to the show. For Elvis to be portrayed as this easily manipulated kid, when anyone who watched the documentaries mentioned above knew The King was always in charge. If you tip the weight of the narrative to Colonel Tom you have to reduce the personality of Elvis.”
The correct answer to my question is THE MUSIC! The guiding light to Elvis’s life and reason and that core, the heart of the man, was sadly missing in this movie. I adored Elvis (still do), and this movie made me sad.
Plus, I have no idea what Tom Hanks was doing with his awful gremlin of a characterization, lol.
I just about jumped through my Twitter screen the other day at some young thing saying that Elvis should be canceled because he never credited all those black musicians he stole his music from. Grrrr. Do NOT come for the King! 😡
ps. I’m not sure a broken heart, addiction to pills, and isolated and lonely because of overbearing fame equals grotesque.

Do you want to know what I really feel about Austin Butler, Elvis try-hard? His eyes are too close together and I got so sick of his lips in the trailer. Fucking duck-lips, man.
THERE. Divorce me now. I am mean and petty.
BC is beautiful and goofy and perfect but Butler just does not do it for me. Not at all, so I will never see this movie you speak of.
eta: The Elvis trailer played before one of the Benedict movies I went to see multiple times. That is the only reason why I watched it so many times.
eta2: Elvis died when I was 3, so while I grew up on his movies (I have seen them all - ALL), we were more of a John Denver household, so while I can sing along to the lyrics of Elvis songs and recognize his voice, it wasn't really my thing.
eta3: I am sorry the movie made you sad. That sucks.

I need to go away before I start breaking things. I wasn’t talking about Butler’s duck lips (yes, overplayed), I was talking about Elvis’s soul.

My cousin saw the movie and loved it, but he said it was really about Tom Parker and that Tom Hanks should win lots of awards for the role.
I was too young to be an Elvis fan, but of course I loved his singing. And his Jailhouse Rock “video” is wonderful! Re-watching Paddington 2 last week reminded me of it during the Hugh Grant’s prison sound-and-dance number!
