I wasn't under the impression that he was the star. I saw only one review, and his character was the one the reviewer found most difficult to believe. In any case, I have no plans to see it.

I wasn't under the impression that he was the star. I haven't seen the movie (I may just for Hiddles, but it's really not my genre) but he's first-billed which qualifies him as "the star" of the movie even if his character isn't the most interesting. It's by definition, even if not by quality of characterization. I need to see "Two Faces of January". I love me some Oscar Isaac, sad to hear it's not among his best acting-wise. He's my favorite actor of his age group although there are some (like Benedict or Hiddleston) I follow more intensively. Although "age group" is a bit of a broad concept, take Marion Cotillard who's my favorite actor of all, she's only 4 years older but I count her as a generation above cause she's been established for so long.

Apparently the Kong movie is doing better than the predictions were saying and even when I'm not consider myself a Hiddleston fan I'm really happy for him. After all that social media bashing he is having a decent hit in the box office. Take that, Tumblr! It was not only tumblr, you probably didn't visit his imdb page (like BC's when he got engaged or even worse) although I think that the movie being a well known blockbuster it being a hit or not doesn't depend on TH being or not in it. It's like Fassbender. I'm sure Alien is going to be good but the projects/films he's been in were not good at the box office. I forgot to say that is a pity Delorb is not participating. She was so worried about TH only having Loki. I'm not interested on this movie and I didn't like the trailers or pictures.

Watch Show Me a Hero instead, if you haven't seen it. Two Faces is really quite a bore overall, plot-wise. Show Me is an interesting story at least. Although I loved the acting of VM in Two Faces, the very best part of the movie was the location shooting - but you can get a better plot in a travelogue about Greece. What sets BC ahead of actors talent-wise, to me, is that Cumberbatch always seems to be able to rise far above even mundane material. He has a knack for making even poorly written characters interesting and dynamic. I can't really say that of OI from the material that I have seen him in at least. :-))

I watched Captain Fantastic last night with a friend. It's now on Amazon Prime. It was really very brilliant. Viggo was amazing. I hadn't seen anything like it before, and it brought up some really good questions about fitting into society and how to raise children. One thing I particularly loved (which was alien to me) was how the family talked to each other. From the oldest to the youngest, they spoke to each other with respect, understanding, intelligence and feeling. It was unique.
Part of me was thrilled that they were living outside of this sick society in a purer way, and another part of me was worried that he was just creating a bunch of smart misfits who couldn't connect with worldly people.

I watched it some time ago. It is very original and charming but also not much believable. I liked it very much and you are right, the way the family behave towards each other was very endearing and democratic. It was ideal, they could question everything and everyone.

Watch Show Me a Hero instead, if you haven't seen it. Thanks for the rec, but I've already seen it. I was a bit underwhelmed, but I think I was expecting too much from it cause it's from the creators of The Wire. But then TW was a slowburn too. What sets BC ahead of actors talent-wise, to me, is that Cumberbatch always seems to be able to rise far above even mundane material. This is definitely true, although not in every case (imho.) Almost all films I've seen from OI have actually been very good, he has gotten himself into a very good position partly by talent and partly by luck. He has one of those faces and naturalistic (as opposed to theatrical) ways of acting which means he can melt into almost any role, he isn't very limited by social status or even ethnicity of the characters he plays. I think for Benedict it's simply much harder to completely disappear in a character, his looks and his voice which make him so perfect for some roles mean it's harder for him to not be noticed, so to speak. This is not really a question of talent, more of looks and style.

I kind of have the totally opposite reaction to those two actors (funny thing that individual perception is). It is BC who I find has the acting style and looks that can "melt into almost any role". I was completely blown away when I found out that the same actor was Khan in STiD was also JA in The 5th Estate. Even when I saw the credits I still didn't actually believe it. And then when I saw him as the hapless Little Charles in A:OC I was really taken aback again. He seemed like another totally different person.
Although I haven't seen as many examples of OI's acting, in the projects I have seen him in he has a very identifiable style to me so I always feel I am watching OI. And especially in The Two Faces of January - he seemed totally disinterested in his character and very removed from inhabiting it. I caught hints of this same "style" in Show Me a Hero and it kind of drew me out of the moment of the series.
Perhaps I just have to see more of his work to more fully appreciate his acting. But I don't like Star Wars or X-Men so I won't be viewing those any time soon. I have seen Llewelyn Davis, Ex Machina, Show Me a Hero and The Two Faces of January (as well as a few of the movies he had other smaller roles in but I really don't particularly remember his contributions in those movies so I won't count them). Other than the SW movies and X-Men stuff I wouldn't be adverse to going to a film just to watch him in it, so I will keep an eye out for new OI movies in the future. You being a fan of his - are there any new ones that you would reconmend? Or old ones that I have missed that I should hunt up? 😄

And then when I saw him as the hapless Little Charles in A:OC I was really taken aback again. I can actually see that, but for me it's different cause I was already a fan of his before he even signed up for any of those movies, so I obviously knew it was him. It doesn't help when you see a film just for one actor (as happened with me re: STID and T5E) because then you are just focused on that specific actor unless the film is good enough to really draw you in. When I watch Sherlock I immediately forget it's Benedict because he just 100% inhabits that role, ditto TIG and Doctor Strange along with many of his older works (Cabin Pressure, Hawking, Third Star...) but if I'm not that hot on the film itself it's not the same. Did this make sense? But this is not to say I find BC unconvincing in anything he's done, there's only one performance of his I actively think was not good (12YAS.) Inside Llewyn Davis woke me up to Oscar Isaac as an actor, I really liked the movie and OI's performance and now in retrospect it's fun cause Adam Driver is in it as well and he's another actor I have since become a fan of (through Star Wars where I thought he was the MVP.) But since you've seen it and quite a few of his more famous works already, I'd maybe suggest checking out A Most Violent Year as well, it's a calm but interesting film and a great performance by Oscar. And Drive, quite honestly I don't really remember OI in it, it's been a while since I've seen it. But it's a pretty awesome movie with a compelling performance by Ryan Gosling. Excellent soundtrack, too. Whatever you do don't watch Sucker Punch. OI was fine, I guess, but I just don't like the movie at all. Star Wars is my favorite ongoing film franchise, but since you don't like it I'm not going to try to force (ha ha) it down your throat. I'm really looking forward to Annihilation this year (or well, next probably here in Finland) since it's by Alex Garland and I absolutely LOVED Ex Machina - for which I think OI was really snubbed for best supporting actor.

For me, anything he's in requires at least two watchings because the first one is spent just looking at him. Even Sherlock! And it has nothing to do with whether or not I like what I'm watching. After seeing TIG at the premiere, I assumed it was good but I couldn't be sure until I saw it again a few months later when it came out.
I thought he was very good in 12YAS. I read somewhere that they needed someone who could be believable as a sympathetic slave-owner. I think it was a difficult character to play, and he did it perfectly. I don't think anyone can say they "enjoy" a movie that's so difficult to watch, but we can agree that it's a great movie.
