I watched allll of Holidate, and, I agree, it was terrible. I liked the premise but the execution was just yuck. 😂

All very good points Magda! It does sort of defy description, which a good movie should, I think. Ellie can correct me if I’m wrong (which I most likely am), but my understanding is after Ireland fought/won their freedom from England a Civil War broke out about how the country should be run. One faction thought it was going to end up exactly as it had been under the British, and the other faction thought differently, so they set to work trying (and succeeding), to kill the other faction. The IRA lost. Lots of Irish died, killed by their own countrymen, and that’s what was going on on the mainland in the movie. It was underscored by that Garda who couldn’t remember and didn’t care who was executing who so long as someone was killed and he got his free lunch. Savage. The applicable metaphor in Banshees was Colm (a fiddle player), cutting off his fingers, ruining his ability to make music in his eagerness to move on from a relationship that had become untenable to him. It’s the old cutting off your nose to spite your face scenario, and the movie is a metaphor for the war. The religious aspects didn’t play too much into the basis of the war, although Northern Ireland spent exactly one day in the new republic before splitting off and rejoining the UK, so there must have been some religious impetus there. I hated the bit about Jenny and what happened to her. She was such an adorable donkey! Do you think Dominic’s death was a suicide?

This article is about movies on Netflix now (I didn't check yet if they're available here).
Also, there a series I recommend on HBO (at least here): Somebody Somewhere. There is 1 season and the second is supposed to be released next year.

Thanks, Magda! That was indeed a powerful review of a powerful film. Well done.

I just watched Glass Onion and it’s a good entertaining if over the top Hollywood flick. That’s all! Lol I’m still perplexed why some American critics treats these movies like masterworks deserving of prestigious awards, tho. I guess similar with Top Gun 2! (Which I haven’t watched it). Seriously, I just saw a few talking about the possibility of a Criterion DVD! You never know, I guess! But I am very unsure about it! I don’t know maybe if they will become something iconic like Jaws, Die Hard or Aliens but we will know with the years and I’m not sure they have the cinematic mastery of the filmmakers behind those old popular blockbusters! For example, I had to adapt to the quick boring editing! I hate when modern films move too quick! It was just good but far from perfect storytelling. I actually think the first one was slightly better because it was more simple. This one is just a little too cartoonishly. Both are good fun but I am not interested on watching them again.

There’s a YouTube channel that posts all the old Siskel and Ebert movie reviews, and I’m watching them every now and then. Boy, were they ever wrong about some of their reviews!
Some movies I’ve never heard of were praised as classics that people would talk about for decades to come, and they also gave a thumbs-down to literal classics. For example, they completely missed the point of 9 to 5, saying that it wasn’t funny enough to be a comedy or good enough to be a movie. They loved Dolly Parton, though - the only good thing about the movie! That’s one of those rare movies that I remember seeing at the theatre when it came out. We arrived a bit late, and sat in the first seats we could find in the dark theatre. When the lights came on at the end, I saw that there were no men at all in the packed theatre. I’m guessing that all the men felt the same way as Gene Siskel and had no interest in seeing it. I watch 9 to 5 every time it’s on tv, and it never gets old.
They also disliked Poltergeist! They loved E.T. though, which they reviewed in the same episode. In another episode, they predicted the Oscars for 1987 (I think), and went on and on about none of the nominated songs being good enough or memorable enough to even deserve a nomination. They showed clips from the movies featuring the songs, and I think all of them had been hit songs on the radio. Ha!

I didn’t watched Poltergeist until recently! My mother didn’t let us to watch horror films when we were very young so I guess I miss a few popular 1980s stuff, especially those kinda designed for kids/young teenagers. I, of course, watched the more adult horror movies in my teens!
It’s a good movie. More Spielberg than Tobe Hooper. I was still expecting for something more daring because it was a “banned” film in my childhood! Lol

I watched Glass Onion last night and thought it was rather poorly written. I guess it was a way to spend two hours instead of putting things up your nose but I wasn’t that impressed. Everyone was a caricature, the editing must have been by Baz Luhrman, lol, and I didn’t care what happened to any of those people. I liked the first one much better!

Yes, it was very over the top! It wasn’t so acclaimed like this one but I think See How They Run was a better commentary/satire of whodunnit stories. It was also cartoonishly but the characters were more endearing. At least, the two main were! The suspects were nasty, obviously!
