Someone remembers Peter Weir’s movie Fearless? I watched it at the time but I remembered it some days ago when someone posted one of the accident scene during Weir’s anniversary so I searched for it and found it on BluRay.
I guess it’s narratively conventional but still very moving. Rosie Perez had the showy role as the mourning traumatized mother (and if I remember well, she was nominated to the Oscar for the role) but Jeff Bridges is just sublime in the lead role as the “hero” who just believes he is some kind of untouchable God. He is such a quiet actor so frequently is taken for granted.
A young pre fame Benicio Del Toro is there. I have forgotten him in this!
I also recently rewatched Akita Kurosawa’s Dreams. It’s not perfect but I’m very fond to that film. It was my first Kurosawa film and I have some shots just engraved on my mind. I watched it a few times when I was a teenager but I haven’t watched it in years! It’s a little didactic but a few of the stories are told in such a beautiful way. I love the first two with the kid and the one with the dead soldiers and the rabid dog.

Fearless is an amazing movie. Iirc, it had the stunning Isabella Rossellini as Jeff Bridges wife.

Oh, she is so beautiful and she was in her prime then! Every time she was shown on the screen, I couldn’t stop thinking: “what a beautiful woman!” She looks a lot like her mother (another extremely beautiful woman) but the dark hair gives her a slightly stronger presence.

Even the sound of IR's voice sound soooo beautiful!
I think she is gorgeous! And she's an excellent actor!!
I hope to see her again in the second season of "Julia".

We just watched "Anatomy of a Fall".
What a great film! Tension, courtroom drama, character development, atmosphere... and great acting from everyone, especially Sandra Hüller (but kudos to Messi, the border collie, who played "Snoops", too!!).
I've now seen 3 of the 5 actresses up for Oscar nominations, and while I liked all three in their respective roles (Annette Bening, Sandra Hüller and Carey Mulligan) Sandra Hüller's performance in this film is... inspirational.
Really, really HIGH recommendation for this movie!

We watched "May December" last night and was thoroughly entertained.
It's an unusual film and I don't think I found it very humorous (like most of the film critics did apparently) but I can't say it wasn't fascinating and sooooo well acted.
The characters, for the most part, aren't likable, but they did get me to pay attention to them and eventually make me care about them.
It's a very low-keyed movie with a feel of an "indie" shoestring budget (I have no idea what the actual budget was, but it did give off indie vibes).
It was based on a real life occurrence - a woman who has sex with a 13 year old boy and goes to prison for her crime, but eventually the two marry and have a family after her release.
The plot unfolds by way of a relatively "recognized celebrity" actress, who is on a "research" project before portraying the infamous older woman in an upcoming movie. She stays several days in the company of this weirdly off balance and more than slightly dysfunctional "family" and by the time she leaves things have dramatically changed.
The cast is excellent and that's what really holds things together when things get a bit too complicated. Todd Haynes, the director, has a lot he wants to say, so much so that I feel sometimes he barely has control of the narrative.
But he does succeed IMO and the film is provocative, quirky and well worth watching.
What it strangely isn't is salacious. Especially strange since the whole essence of the movie revolves around sexual themes (child rape, predatory behaviour, obsession, sublimation and domination).
It is more like the unraveling of a murder mystery. But that's only on one of the levels. There's another whole different dynamic going on with the actress and her internal conflicts!
It certainly won't be everyone's cip of tea but I found it thought provoking and well worth watching.

I did kind of a dumb thing last night - I accidentally subscribed to Amazon Prime. I didn’t realize I had done it until I got an email from them thanking me for my free trial membership! I must have clicked something, obviously, so I now have 28 days to enjoy it before they charge me $9.99 a month unless I cancel.
So I figured I’d check out some Oscar nominations while I have the chance. I just finished watching The Holdovers, which was good. It reminded me a lot of something else, but I haven’t figured out what. It just felt awfully familiar. Also, having lived through the 1970’s, I have to say that the clothes and hairstyles weren’t ugly enough. Ha! The boys’ long hair, especially, was too well groomed.
I spent some time looking through the other shows Amazon Prime has, but what am I missing? They have all the Sherlock seasons, which is nice. They have Oppenheimer, but it doesn’t really interest me.
I’d appreciate any suggestions!

Well, we watched Anatomy of a Fall on Amazon Prime (we subscribe) but the catch is you have to cough up an additional $7. I figure it's worth it since it's still cheaper than going to the cinema. And I think it's one of the best movies of the year.
Dan and I are watching on Prime the series The Great. It's definitely NOT historically accurate but it is an extremely charming series and one of the stars is Nicholas Hoult ( who was in The Current War with BC).

Thanks for the suggestions! I haven’t quite gotten the hang of Amazon Prime yet.
I’ve asked my sister to check out how it works for ordering stuff online - which she does all the time. It seems like a scam to me, though. Whenever I order from Amazon, I always ask for the free shipping, which they usually say takes a week or something. But they suggest getting Amazon Prime to get the order in two days, which I don’t do. And then the order arrives in two days anyway - or even the next day.
I was very disappointed tonight because I was all ready to watch new episodes of Line of Duty. I had watched it a few years ago when we got it free with a streaming service through our library. I became obsessed with it! But I could only get so far and then they took it away and I never saw the final season. So what is Amazon Prime doing? The only seasons they’ll let me watch are the ones I’ve already seen! If I want to see the last season, I have to subscribe to Britbox or something!

Movies Argentina 1985 - Well made and entertaining, even comedic at times, considering the theme.
Saltburn - If you don't have to pay for it I think you could watch it. The cast is good, the cinematography excellent. I just think it was a mash up of different books/movies, the first part unnecessarily long and boring to me, the critic and satire of the rich too exagerated and ultimately shallow.
Series Deadloch - Australian series set in Tasmania. Watch it. If Eddie annoys you a little, give her some time.
