Yep. I was going to post it.
The Gipsies I knew were all dark haired and with dark complexion. I looked for Mikey Walsh and he is white with blue eyes.

I would compare them to Irish gipsies that aren't exactly gipsies but I googled them and Welsh gipsies are actually Romani!
He looks very Celtic!

Apparently this property has been in the works for a while - deadline.com/2016/05/bbc-films-sets-morgan-matthews-to-direct-gypsy-boy-boards-on-chesil-beach-and-breathe-cannes-1201756041/Sounds like an interesting role for BC. And a very dramatic one too! I really am drawn to stories that involve boxing (a bias because of one of my husband's books). We came across a very large family of Irish "gypsies" (at least that is what they identified themselves as) in our travels and they were all fair haired and skinned with blue eyes. I am just relieved that the role he was talking about doing (that he had never done before) wasn't a musical!!! LOL! I hope there are scenes with him showing the young Mikey the ways of the ring so BC can get to use all his athletic skills and show off his spectacular arm muscles! :-))

Oh man, I HATE boxing movies. Honestly they're a dime a dozen, the fact that "boxing movie" can even be classified a movie genre despite being about one dull sport is insane.
I've not bothered seeing a boxing movie since Million Dollar Baby and I'm pretty sure I've never liked one, so this is a sure pass for me.
But good for Benedict, boxing movies tend to be popular and acclaimed.

Not even Raging Bull?! It's a very poetic and tragic sport so it's not weird there are a lot of movies about it. This is a bio, which it's funny because we were speculating if the "different" role was about the genre of the movie or about the role. Obviously it's the latter! Also I like the idea of him playing a teenager father. He can look younger but he is playing his age.

Oh, boy do I agree with you sgev! Boxing movies lend themselves to tragic confrontation, conflict, dramatic story arcs, societal issues and tests of endurance. And a lot of the good ones are very poetic in form and substance! They are the epic poetry of the visual arts.
Raging Bull, On the Waterfront, Requiem for a Heavyweight, Body and Soul, Fat City... the cream of the crop for sure, so I always hope for any new one that comes along to reach for those standards.
And of course someday - a movie adaptation of the book about Tommy Burns by a certain Canadian author... a girl can dream! ;-)

Probably they will correct it but The Hollywood Reported is reporting that BC will play the son (in the title and first paragraph) AND the father (hidden in the article)!!
I would said it was because they didn't want anyone won them the exclusive but they were the last major outlet posting it!

Gay Times has a quote by the director I didn't see anywhere:
I fell in love with this story as soon as I heard Mikey speaking about his childhood on the radio a few years ago,” explains director Morgan Matthews.
“Mikey’s extraordinary life touches upon the universal subjects of identity, love, conflict, courage and sacrifice – set within a brutal and extreme yet paradoxically beautiful and intoxicating hidden world. I’m so excited to have Benedict on board – it’s a dream to be able to work with him.”

Irish "gypsies" generally prefer to be known as "Travellers." There is very mixed feelings about them in Ireland. Mostly because of their culture which tends to be very macho (including in its treatment of women) and quite violent. There's a tradition of bare knuckle fighting which, although illegal, still goes on but has mostly transitioned to regular boxing. In fact members of the Traveller community are among the Country's best boxers and have represented Ireland at the Olympic Games - the most recent being John Joe Nevin who won a silver medal at the London Olympics.
Travellers have traditionally shunned integration with the "settled" community ,as those who live in regular accommodation in fixed locations are known. They have also tended not to do well in education because they move around so much schooling is very hap hazard and they prefer girls to marry at about 16 and boys to earn a living as soon as possible.
So there is tension among young travellers who want to break away from that life and older members of the community who want to stick to the traditions.
It's very interesting material for a movie - the only worry I have is BC doing the accent. I don't think I have ever heard a non Irish actor get the Irish accent right and the Irish Traveller accent is even more difficult. Still, I guess that's not a big problem. The rest of the world won't really notice if he gets the accent wrong.
