Interesting that this news wasn’t mentioned by Variety or THR. I mean she is a very hot actress right now, doesn’t? Even if she is mainly a TV actress! Actually probably the new real stars are all from TV! People go to see superheroes at the movie theatre but new popular actors are from TV! That’s my theory, anyway!
Another theory: maybe they are waiting to confirm the other male star! Penkovsky should be a very important part! In theory more relevant than hers (but I haven’t read the script so I could be wrong!). I was thinking which actor with a similar age and relevant name as Cumberbatch could play him and I thought in Fassbender. They could go for a real Russian, of course! But I was thinking in big names! Then I thought it could polemic if they hire someone like him with the Me Too stuff! He was accused of DV years ago and he seems to have a low profile recently! Actually I checked his IMDb entry and it seems he is busy preparing for his new movie, Kung Fury 2 with Arnold Schwarzenegger and David Hasselhoff (WTF?!!! I guess they went for all the German sounding names in Hollywood!!!) He did another X-men movie, too!
Anyway I thought he would be great for the role of a mysterious and probably dangerous man who should be contacted by the ordinary British guy played by BC.
Irish rising star Jessie Buckley has boarded Ironbark, Dominic Cooke’s Cold War drama that will star Benedict Cumberbatch and Rachel Brosnahan. Merab Ninindze, Angus Wright, and Kirill Pirogov have also joined the cast of the film, which starts shooting in the UK on Monday (Oct 15).
In Ironbark, Buckley will play Sheila Wynne, the wife of British businessman Greville Wynne, played by Cumberbatch.
I looked up Greville Wynne’s biography. This actress is 12 years younger than Benedict, but in real life his wife was only two years younger. They married when he was 27 and she was 25. They divorced, and he remarried when he was 51. He then separated from his second wife. He had a child, but there’s no more information about it.
So maybe the wife’s character is only in the movie when they show the early part of his life, when they were both much younger. I guess they’ll have makeup to make Benedict look younger for those scenes.
That photo is of her "waiting" for him when he was in prision in Russia! She was very involve with the campaigning for his freedom so I guess she will be shown during that part of the story. There are a lot of stock photos of her during that time:
That actress is very young! I seriously thought for a minute she was playing his daughter! Maybe his wife was very young, of course!
That's one of the problems with some productions. The actresses are too young for the characters they are playing and compared to the male actors.
In this production there are already two very young actresses. The character of the CIA handler played by Brosnahan is invented according to a guy on twitter who seems to know what he's saying. There was a woman who was the contact with Penkovsky: Janet Chisholm.
She was born in Kasauli, India, and educated in Berkshire, studying Russian and French. After school, she worked in London before joining the Allied Control Commission and moving to West Germany. There she met her future husband, Ruari Chisholm, and began working for British Intelligence.
Her husband was a spy who headed the MI6 station in Moscow but worked under the guise of a visa officer. When Oleg Penkovsky offered Soviet military secrets to MI6, she became the go-between. To all outward appearances, Janet was an ordinary mother of three children. She would meet Penkovsky in a local park and he would offer what appeared to be sweets, but were actually disguised documents containing military secrets about the Soviet nuclear weapons arsenal.
Now that I looked at her page I see she was 10 years younger than Greville, so Rachel Brosnahan's age isn't that bad. Why diid they change the nationality?
Because they wanted an American? I would said that I remembered to have read about her but then I thought no she was Russian and was married to a Russian and she was the one giving the info to the British agents then I remembered I was thinking in one of the subplots of the last Le Carre book!!!
I doubted when I saw the photo in that article but I think now I actually like Jessie Buckley’s casting! Having seen the photos, I think she looks the part even when she is very young. She looks like the real person and BC with his super short hair, too! I was more confused by Rachel Brosnahan‘s casting! That new info gave a little context, tho.! Probably she will be an amalgam of Chisholm and other character?
