Interesting! It's the Deadline article so they edited it or I didn't read that part. I guess we should add it to his schedule then!

I loved TTSS, so this is good news for me. Although I hope it's something he's doing in addition to, not instead of, Smiley's People.
Regarding the bad writer, remember that prior to DS, Scott Derrickson had only done some bad horror films. So maybe this guy just needs the right team of collaborators!

Early 2019 production is like TIG, inasmuch as that could be looking to be timed for a theoretical Oscar run, if up to it, next year. It says it already has the finance but much will still probably depend on what potential sales interest there is in it at Cannes.
And I'm hoping/presuming that this will be in addition to, rather than instead of "Smiley's People" too, although that film will still surely be 90% focussed on Smiley even if they intend to expand the Peter Guillam character.
There's still the whole of the rest of this year, though, with no official confirmation of the scheduling of anything. Strange 2 will probably be later next year, but that's not a certainty yet.

It wouldn't be weird if we have another announced soon considering it's time of Cannes market. Not Doctor Strange, of course! Those movies doesn't need external financiers!

Whatever happened to that 'War Magician' movie?
Also, you're right, come to think of it I don't even remember Guilliam in Smiley's People.

Who knows about War Magician!? That was my point with saying the project didn't sounded very advanced considering it didn't have a date (it had! My wrong!). It could take years (as with Patrick Melrose. We know now that he was attached since 2013!) or just don't happen at all (Remember Blood Mountain?!).
Frequently these announcements are just to find the money to do the movies. That's why Film Nation is presenting the projects at Cannes Market but it's never something sure! Cast or crew change, projects disappear, etc.

I thought I gathered that Film Nation are actually financing it, so the money is theoretically (probably provisionally) there already in this case. That puts it in a pretty strong position, which is obviously not the same for the many that are indeed hopefully announced and touted at the film festivals, where they're looking for finance from scratch. And it's lack of finance that may indeed have been a problem for any or all of the other potential BC projects. At one point there was even confirmation of the location filming for "Rogue Male" as if really imminent, but still nothing's been heard of it since. And having provisional finance in place won't be all there is to it either. Film Nation will be looking to offset what they need to offset of that commitment in advance of actually having to come up with the money. And that means being able to attract secondary finance and making sure the right distribution deals can be made.
And who knows about "War Magician". I seem to recall the writer making comments to the effect that he was making adjustment to the script to "Cumberbatch it" as if that too was pretty imminent. But that was ages ago. What slightly surprises me is that nothing's been heard of any of the StudioCanal projects that were supposed to be imminent ages ago further to their taking a stake in SunnyMarch. I think "War Magician" and "Rogue Male" were both provisionally in that bracket.

I thought Rogue Male was being financed by Fox Searchlight Pictures?

You never know! Here is the announcement of Blood Mountain: variety.com/2014/film/global/benedict-cumberbatch-to-star-in-blood-mountain-exclusive-1201074011/It had a date (“April”), a location (“Morocco”), financing, a script, a star, etc. but it didn’t happened. It was announced when the company presented it in the market but it quickly fell through. I remember it was around one of the last if not the last Cabin Pressure recordings. He was very muscular and it was rumored it was for this. Soon later he went to a Con and was asked for the movie and he just said it didn’t work because the director had other commitments. It’s the same with the quality. Maybe it’s not something you are interested because the cast, crew or the theme or you feel excited because the same but you still cannot predict if it will be good or not based in just that. I have seen a few fans on Twiter saying this is another bio about another World War II figure when to me it sounded more like a spy movie and it’s very clear for the synopsis that it’s about the Cold War (not the same, kids!!!). It’s even compared to TTSS, one of my favorites movies! It doesn’t mean it would be great again but the objective thing is wait and see! My ideal project would be one with a great respected filmmaker but even there I can’t say it would be great. Just being excited about it and if you are not surely there would be another project. I mean he never stop! And it’s very clear he doesn’t have problems to being offered new roles!
