I don’t know if believe this. I mean he clearly has strong ideas about his characters and knows how to convince (impose?) them to his bosses: he wanting to do mo-cap in both The Hobbit and Dr. Strange, he wanting to play both Dr.Strange and The Grinch as Americans, he wanting to play the bad guy too in Dr. Strange, etc. (And we haven’t even talk about the movies/series he has produced). But this is too much and frankly sounds like a gossip column by a Conservative wanting to exploit his image as a very opinionated left wing actor who likes to manipulate the British public into liberal causes (as when he “demanded” that “unsuspected” theatre goers housed Syrian refugees! Or just asked for donations to help little kids who were suffering! One of those! 😉) Actually, it’s my impression that even when he is indeed left-winger he is much more open minded that what those people like to think. They see him like a cliched SJW little girl from Tumblr!
The few times he has talked about Brexit he has mentioned how impoverished some section of the UK are and how the desperation of those people was exploited by smart but unscrupulous politicians. Ok, it didn’t sounds kind to the politicians but my impression is that he likes to understand people, situations and characters, even when they don’t think like him or are just plain nasty! I can’t imagine he trying to dehumanize a fair portrayed character (who doesn’t think like him) and go against the desires of the author of the play just to impose a political agenda.
Also he seems to genuinely admire Graham! Wasn’t “his brilliant script” the reason he wanted to do this?
