Donald Trump’s biggest donor is set to sue Channel 4 for its portrayal of him in the political drama Brexit: The Uncivil War.
Robert Mercer, the American hedge fund billionaire, has sent a formal letter of claim to the broadcaster outlining his complaint for defamation. Sources close to the magnate say his main concern is that he is portrayed as being complicit in criminal wrongdoing, and also was not consulted before the show was broadcast in January.
Aden Gillett, who plays the businessman, appears on screen for little more than 90 seconds of the 90-minute Brexit drama, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch. In the scene, Mercer is introduced to Arron Banks, the co-founder of the Leave.EU campaign, by Nigel Farage.
In the drama, Mercer tells Banks about “one of my other little projects — a data-mining company” called Cambridge Analytica. The character adds: “Money is one thing, Mr Banks, but data is power.”
Mercer states that he has never met Arron Banks.
While Cambridge Analytica was part-owned by Mercer, in November, before the drama was broadcast, the Information Commissioner’s Office found “no evidence” that the company was “involved in any data analytics work with the EU referendum campaigns”.
Channel 4 received Mercer’s legal complaint last month but said it does not comment on ongoing legal matters. Last night the drama was still available to watch on its catch-up service.

They are, of course, helped by the stupid left wing idiots as the guy who wrote on The Guardian that movies based in real life are a threat to the truth because they aren’t 100% faithful to what really happened! So Congratulations The Guardian you aren’t very different to Mercer and co.! Both a meanace to free speech and liberalism!
Also of course he sued Channel 4 and not HBO, it seems to me that modern UK is a shame on free speech issues!
EDITED: I just remembered that Michael Jackson Estate actually sued or was threatening to sue HBO because that other HBO-Channel 4 production. The excuse was a non-disparagement deal that the channel agreed when they did something with Jackson in the early nineties. I guess they were trying to stop the airing of the documentary, Brexit was already aired.
