Has anyone seen the new series Legion, with Dan Stevens? I'm really loving it - it's very trippy, lots of mind bending, perspective shifting, time shifting stuff with very good performances and beautiful visuals and music. It features Aubrey Plaza (from Parks and Recreation) and Jean Smart (from Designing Women among other things) and a strong supporting cast. Half the time I'm not sure what's going on, but it is a really fun ride. And Dan Stevens' is pretty far from Cousin Matthew from Downton Abbey. Now I kind of understand what Benedict was talking about when he praised Stevens' performance in The Guest - this guy can really act and act out. It is BC-adjacent, because it is part of the Marvel universe (some characters are mutants, connected to the X-Men...though no crossovers with the films, many characters including the lead is from Marvel comics) Possible spoiler here: {Spoiler about a possible link to the X-Men universe} In the comics, Legion (Dan Stevens' character) is the son of Professor X (James McIvoy/Patrick Stewart in the films) But the show hasn't addressed that yet. But it has shown him to be a powerful mutant. It's also developed (written, directed) by Noah Hawley who is behind the Fargo series. What prompted me to post about it here, apart from me being kind of captivated by it, is that there is one line that repeats throughout the first few episodes that keeps reminding me of one of BC's roles. A character says "Shall we begin" at the start of certain scenes...they repeat the line on multiple occasions in 2 of the 3 episodes so far. And every time I hear it, I keep thinking of "So, shall we begin" BC's line as Khan in STiD.

I started watching it, but I didn't make it past the first 30 minutes of the first episode cause my remote broke, I couldn't pause it when I needed to at that moment and then afterwards I couldn't be bothered to search where I left off. Yeah, lazy. But I'm determined to catch up! Of course all the episodes are on the internet but it's very very rare for a show to air in actual TV in Finland this soon after original broadcast so I refuse to watch online! it is part of the Marvel universe X-Men are Marvel, but Legion - talking off the TV show not the comics - and Doctor Strange aren't taking place in the same universe (the MCU.) Marvel doesn't own the film/TV rights to Legion, that's owned by Fox - I think Legion is in the same universe as the recent X-Men films (with Fassy, McAvoy etc) and Deadpool. TV shows that are in the same universe as the Avengers are the Netflix ones ("The Defenders": Daredevil, Jessica Jones etc.)

Thank you so much for writing about this, Hannah Lee. I bingwatched the three episodes. I was needing a series, I tried Taboo but after 3 or 4 episodes, it bored me a little. I thought this had to do with angels and demons and I hadn't given it a try.
Dan Stevens was good on The Guest but here he is excellent. He looks so young at times that I had to check his age.
I think the series is very interesting. Gladly I know nothing about the comic character and this makes it more interesting. As a horror/fantasy show is excellent.

I do get confused about how the various projects/universes intersect. I think I need a big Venn diagram of the thing. Hope you do get to catch up on Legion. It's just about the only show I'm following regularly these days (aside from the news ) Though I don't have Netflix at the moment, at some point I do want to catch up on Jessica Jones and Daredevel, and I've liked Agents of Shield whenever I catch an episode, but haven't followed it. I'm pretty relaxed about storylines and timelines needing to tie in/match up. As long as each project makes sense as a standalone, I'm happy.

He seems about 5 years younger to me in Legion than he did on DA 5 years ago, LOL! And he is very good in this. The Eye and the Devil with the Yellow Eyes characters really creep me out. And the rest of the story is such a wild ride

Wow! Episode 6 was so good!
I find it strange people complaining that they are not understanding (on the comments sections of reviews).

I've found it quite interesting too. I wouldn't say I'm terribly impressed, but it is quite intriguing.
And Dan Stevens is going to be a much bigger thing after the roaring success of Beauty and the Beast. I thought it wasn't happening for him after nothing much seemed to materialise after leaving Downton Abbey, and that leaving was probably even a mistake, but that'll have changed now.

Hi everyone! I've been out of this forum a bit as I still haven't got my login working properly on my phone or work PC, so it's just when I get a chance to go online on my home laptop that I can check in here (not a forum problem, it's a me problem...I keep forgetting my password when I'm away from home and I'm too distracted at home to remember to look it up LOL!) I'm still really loving this show. Made the mistake a couple of weeks ago of watching Episode 5 after having a couple of glasses of wine and I wound up very confused. I had to re-watch before the latest episode so I could follow what was going on This is the one show I'm following week by week at the moment; everything else I've been catching up with as the mood strikes me. Episode 6 was so good. This episode really allowed them to spend 'quality' time with the characters, and explore them more. Each character has their own baggage and their own challenges. I like the way they can go on little tangents with each, and take their time a bit. It gives a perspective on the X-Men/mutants experience that the films don't have the luxury of providing. There are so many elements...the horror story, the trippyness, the Wes Anderson-committing-to-a-vibe-and-taking-it-to-the-nth-degree approach to some scenes. Plus the characters have really drawn me in. I like that they just plopped the viewer in (with David) without a lot of preamble. So, for example, we slowly come to understand the Cary/Kerry dynamic over the course of several episodes. The same with Lenny/Benny. Speaking of which, here's an interview with Aubrey Plaza that was done after the premiere episode. She hints at where her character was going, but of course neither the viewer or interviewer could have guessed how she'd play into things as of E6. ** www.avclub.com/article/aubrey-plaza-says-legion-just-going-get-crazier-249956She is so good in this. That scene with her as David's therapist is one of the creepiest things I've seen in a while. It made me never want to see an ant again. And Dan Stevens has really drawn me into his character. Banjo playing? superpowerful? supervunerable? Who knows. And all the other featured actors have been really strong too. Syd's the only one I haven't really gotten into, but I think that is kind of intentional as she seems to be sort of a viewer surrogate character trying to sort what's happening (and she gets sidelined by other characters who are trying to keep her from getting too clear a picture of what's going on. She 'appeared' so detached from most of the action in E1 that I saw some commentary about the episode trying to tease out whether she was real or a figment of David's imagination ) I'd love to see Benedict work with Noah Hawley down the line. He has such a compelling visual approach to storytelling...always a little out of the box. But he never forgets to keep the characters front and center, which creates such an interesting place for talented actors to work in. There has been some talk of characters from the X-Men dipping into this show, and in E6 they even mentioned David's father, who in the comics is Professor X. But given the recurring visits to the Astral Plane, I wonder if at some point we could get some reference to Doctor Strange
