This is an interesting opinion: I think a lot of actors would kill to have his career and working with big names like that but on the other hand, it's true that he doesn't work with new talents or indeed, women. Also it seems to me that some actors do comic book stuff to have a security web and risk themselves with edgier and much more personal projects. I think that's what Scarlett Johansson did with Under the Skin and BC is trying to do with stuff like Patrick Melrose, The Child in Time and Brexit. Michelle Williams recently said that was the reason she did Venon. Not everyone have the luck/contacts/ popularity DiCaprio has right now. He is probably the last superstar in that he could open a movie just with his name. That's great but again, it doesn't happen with new stars.

Yes, but when he was starting out he did a little indie called What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, lol. And he was brilliant. Lots of people gravitate towards what makes them comfortable. Other people are more experimental. Leo’s collaboration with Scorsese gave us some tremendous films. Why does everyone have to judge everyone else all the time? I don’t understand it. 🤷🏻♀️

He has worked with Martin Scorsese multiple times to produce wonderfully memorable films. He's one of my most favourite actors and his choice of directors has been impressive with equally impressive results. In the end it's what's up on the screen that really counts to me (regardless of the gender of the director or the size of the budget of the production) and over the years DiCaprio has chosen very, very wisely IMO.

I don't think Lodge is "judging" DiCaprio but the article. DiCaprio is great but is he really "adventurous" just because he choose established famous filmmakers and never has done a comic book movie? Here is another critic judging the piece: This other tweet is actually judging DiCaprio, tho. I remember a Mexican actor who did a film with Johnny Depp and was asked how he was and he in the nicest way possible said he didn't have any real contact with him because big stars like him are very protected by their people and don't socialize with other actors!

I think it's an interesting discussion:

He’s not dead yet - he’s only 44, so there’s still plenty of time for him to become a superhero if he wants. He began as a child actor, so he’s been doing this a long time. I remember all the teen-magazine attention he received way back then. A co-worker and I once discussed our favourite actors and actresses, and he asked why I hadn’t mentioned LDC. I replied “Because I’m not 15”. So yes, I still see him as that teen heartthrob. But he has gone on to take unusual roles and doesn’t seem to care what the critics think.

It was always a badge of pride that journalists, not himself, put on him. If he do a franchise film, not necessarily a comic book flick, some day it would ba a big news and I can see a lot of sad faces of some of those journalists! There are some quarters that are proud of Leo's "purity"!
I think he doesn't do them because he doesn't need them. Again, he is the last real movie star. Not even Brad Pitt or George Clooney have the box office power he has doing "serious" movies. But who knows, if we talk about taking risks and him not exactly doing it because even when he works in interesting wonderful films he just choose established powerful directors that even if they fail they all would be good because they are who they are then we can say that someone like Pitt is much edgier because he actually works with new talents doing films that aren't so accesible to general audiences and sometimes he and his directors fail in a big way! On the other hand, Scorsese rarely has a commercial hit anymore when he doesn't work with DiCaprio! So clearly it's his name the one with the power and not the director's!

It still seems to me that some of these folks are equating “riskier” with “better.”

Well, The Beach wasn't "better"! Talking about female directors, the mad Twitter world was the other day fawning over Keanu Reeves because he has worked with a lot of women. I checked and it's true! Most of those movies weren't exactly well-received (also I was surprised with the number of movies he does that I didn't have any idea existed!) but they were indeed directed by women. Then someone mentioned how of all the Marvel actors Sebastian Stab Stan was the best because no one has worked with more women than him. She mentioned a few Marvel actors as the ones who work exclusively with men and the liar included BC! I remember it because there was another (or it's the same?) fan on the comments saying how cool is that a relatevely young actor as Stan has worked with more female directors than DiCaprio! Well, this is not a competition BUUUUTTTT I checked Stan filmography and I counted 6 female directors (including episodes in old series). BC has worked with 8! So take that, Sebastian Stan's fan! I'm not counting his Jane Campion project but I'm including Hamlet which it's also listed on IMDB Here is the list: Rachel Talalay (The Sixth Thatchers, 2017) Lindsey Turner (Hamlet, 2015) Annalisa Piras (Girlfriend in a Coma, 2012) Susanna White (Parade's End, the five episodes, 2012) Dictynna Hood (Wreckers, 2011) Larysa Kondracki (The Whistleblower, 2010). TBF it was just a cameo but I don't have any idea of how long Stan roles were! Hattie Dalton (Third Star, 2010) Hettie MacDonald (Murder is Easy, 2008) She directed one LGTB classic in the 90's called Beautiful Thing. I recognized her name. I didn't checked his older productions because he didn't used to play big character before 2008. If I had included his theatrical and radio work the list would be much longer. He worked with Katie Mitchell, for exmple, and it seems he really admires her because he always mentions her.
