To escape the awful week we had last week, I binge-watched the entire series of Goodnight Sweetheart on Acorn TV. I remember seeing a couple of episodes on tv years ago, but then it disappeared and I forgot all about it until I started browsing on Acorn.
it’s a British sitcom that involves time travel from the 1990’s to WWII. I think I understand why they never showed it again here. The early seasons had a shocking amount of racism and sexism, which probably wouldn’t be allowed to be shown on tv these days. Yes, it was acknowledged in the story that the things that were said were sexist or racist or homophobic, but it was all played for laughs. I guess that type of humour was too common in those days.
Still, I really enjoyed it! I’ve always been fascinated by time-travel stuff, and I was so curious about how the series would end. And I loved the music in it! The character who travels back to the 1940’s pretends to be singer-songwriter and often sang current-day songs that he claimed to have written. Most of the time they were Beatles songs, but there were others, too, and the actor had a lovely voice.
In one episode, he sang a song that was unfamiliar to me, but I recognized it as a Beatles song. I looked it up afterwards, and it’s called Here, There and Everywhere. It’s a beautiful song, and I don’t know why I’d never heard of it before. So, I went to iTunes and I bought it! I love discovering new/old songs!
After I finished watching it, I looked up the show and discovered that although it ended in 1999, they did one more episode in 2016. Acorn TV doesn’t have it. It took me a while, but I finally found it on Daily Motion and watched it last night.
