Yesterday I binged the entire Mrs America series. I had seen occasional episodes when it first aired, but not all of it. I found it absolutely fascinating! Cate Blanchett is terrific at playing someone unlikeable, and yet you still feel sorry for her when things fall apart. It’s so interesting to get both sides of the “women’s lib” movement, and I really didn’t know much about it, even as it must have been happening all around me.
Every episode showed the year, so I was able to think back to what I was doing at the time, and it made sense! My sister is three years older than me, and she and her friends went through high school with the goal of getting married and having children. If they had to get a little job while they waited for that to happen, that was ok, but it was only until Mr Right came along. After watching Mrs America, I can understand that mentality a bit better. My friends and I, though, went through school with the goal of going on to university, learning, and getting exciting jobs doing what we loved. Of course, none of us achieved exactly what we wanted, but the intent was there.
I once ran into the teacher I had in Grade 8, and she told me that she remembered me as being one of the first feminists. I was surprised to hear that! She explained that one time, our class was discussing women working and I said that my mother worked and my sister and I were just fine. Ha! I seriously doubt that my mother was making a political statement by working. We were poor and we needed the money, but she loved going off to work each day and kept doing it even after it was no longer a necessity.
I loved seeing the awful 1970’s fashions and hairstyles - especially because I also looked like that back then! During one episode, I thought a building where they were filming looked familiar, and then I remembered that they shot it in the city where I live! So then that became a distraction because I kept looking around the set rather than pay attention to what was happening.
