I agree with you re Argentina 1985, I was expecting much more because of the comments but it is a decent movie. Ricardo Darín was very good. Anyway, I sometimes want them (Argentineans) to win, like the World Cup.

Yes, I understand that and after all that’s what the Oscars are: a football tournament! It’s not about art. It is nice when your team or a team you like wins.

I finally watched it and I really liked it. It’s pretty good. Not exactly revolutionary. I think Patrick Melrose was more originally directed but this film really shows his talent and his versatility: he can direct huge epic films!
I read somewhere that the politicians part wasn’t necessary but at the end it really complemented the film.
For those who doesn’t like violence, it’s indeed brutal. The cinematography is beautiful so I guess that softened the bloody and visceral parts a little but it’s not exactly “affected” like a lot World War films.
I’m sure Oscar voters will love it.

As they say "War is hell" so I guess it had to be visceral in its approach to stay true to the theme and topic.
I never felt the violence was OTT or done for any other purpose than to clearly express what Erich Maria Remarque was trying to in the book. To me the violence is honest.

It doesn’t bothered me at all but a few people here have reservations about violence. That’s why I wrote it. You know like a trigger warning.
It’s brutal but I never felt it was THAT “realistically” shocking. I think the beauty of the images softened those scenes a little. I think it took a little from They Shall Not Grow Old but a documentary with real scenes it’s obviously always more realistic.

Speaking of which I've seen "They Shall Not Grow Old" twice and think it is a masterpiece. Actually I got Dan a Bluray disco of it for Xmas one time. He was astonished by it. We looked into visiting Jackson's place while in NZ but unfortunately it just isn't doable. 😭

Yeah, I’m one of the squeamish ones in here. I still haven’t watched it and I’m not sure I can. I’d have to cover my eyes through most of it, lol. I’ve gotten so sensitive and tender, probably too much so, as I age I just cant take anything with blood in it. 🤷🏻♀️

I can take blood, since I watch horror movies all the time (which are stupid and absurd) but something that mimics real life? Can't do it. I just happily read the reviews here and add it to my list and then never watch it. But, I appreciate all the discussion!

The violence isn’t glamorized at all in the movie, which was the whole point. We see it the way those poor boys saw it. We react the way those young soldiers react. They went to war expecting the fun adventure they were promised, but the reality was a nightmare.
And if it helps (and it doesn’t really), there’s so much dirt and mud mixed with the battle scenes that it’s hard to even see the red of the blood. I found Saving Private Ryan way more disturbing and sickening than this movie.
