I really don’t want to sound like The Daily Mail but I found this hysterical, I kinda agreed with him in general but at the same time, …he is talking about the Super Mario Bros. movie!!!! 😆 Best of all, it ACTUALLY has a Latino actor in the main cast, variety.com/2023/film/news/john-leguizamo-boycotts-super-mario-bros-movie-casting-inclusion-1235575495/I really like Leguizamo but I kinda think he is some kind of a griffer who uses his Latino heritage to draw some attention to himself. He is very talented (although much better as serious actor than as a comedian and, if he really believes all these, he clearly doesn’t have a sense of humor!). Some time ago, he claimed he used to avoid the sun to get parts in Hollywood so he didn’t looked too brown. I don’t believe him! He is so light skinned that he practically got famous for playing white people! How many Latino actors are so frequently cast as Europeans like him? Son of Sam, Romeo+Juliette and, yeah, his Luigi in the panned Mario Bros movie from the early 1990s! All of them were Italian characters! EDITED And he famously played Toulouse-Lautrec in Moulin Rouge! A famous Frenchman! I remember at the time he said that, someone claimed he had lied about his actual heritage and out of curiosity, I checked his Wikipedia entry. It seems it was edited now so it sounds like he was confused about his own heritage and thanks to a DNA test he discovered that he wasn’t Puerto Rican as he believed but at the time it said it was his father who publicly contradicted and said he was lying. The link to that part still leads to an article about his father denying he is from Puerto Rico, web.archive.org/web/20110824005559/http://latino.foxnews.com/latino/entertainment/2011/06/10/leguizamos-dad-johns-not-puerto-rican/The most embarrassing part is that he was receiving and accepting honors by the Puerto Rican community as one of their own! I don’t know what he is thinking with all these crazy quotes. Again, he is really good and he doesn’t need it. Also, he isn’t helping with representation at all. If he isn’t trustworthy, why people would believe he and others are being overlooked? And Latinos are indeed overlooked in Hollywood films!

he is talking about the Super Mario Bros. movie!!!! 😆 Best of all, it ACTUALLY has a Latino actor in the main cast, I actually LOL'd at both these lines. I just didn't see either coming! 😂 I don’t know what he is thinking with all these crazy quotes. Also, he isn’t helping with representation at all. It feels like a lot of people are suddenly giving these bizarre interviews and saying things that just don't add up. A couple of weeks ago, all the headlines were about stars speaking out on "nepo babies" and it was kind of the same, where the stuff they were saying didn't add up and didn't really help anything. Is this some new PR tactic to garner headlines or...?

TBF I think a lot of the times it’s the press asking silly questions and highlighting out of context quotes that they know will cause furor on social media but, at least in the case of Leguizamo, …. he is talking about Super Mario Bros.!!! Lol
Surely, he was asked because he played Luigui in the first film adaptation (his brother and the lead of the film was the British legend Bob Hoskins) so I doubt it was the interviewer here who was forcing an easy headline.

This is hysterical! Apparently, Fred Armisen, whose mother is from Venezuela and always played the Latino characters in SNL, is also in the movie! So that’s two Latino actors! Lol
It seems to me he wasn’t happy that he wasn’t invited or something and didn’t bothered to research if there were Latinos in the film or not!
EDITED And a third one!
According to Wikipedia, that voice actor isn’t Mexican at all but his parents were both from Argentina, tho.

JL has a new series coming out on Sunday on CNN about Latino life. In the trailer he says he was “told” not to mention his ethnicity when he got to Hollywood in order to get hired. “Passing,” I guess. 🤷🏻♀️

Bu he not just mentioned his ethnicity. He also claimed his father was from Puerto Rico! Why? Are Puerto Ricans less discriminated than Colombians? I don’t know! Obviously, he or whoever told him saw an advantage in saying that. Maybe he feared people would think his family was into drug trafficking or something. It was the 1980s, after all. But I think that’s a big stretch!
I still think that what he did was very wrong because he was being homaged as someone who represented the Puerto Rican community when he was uncovered and TBH I suspect his intention wasn’t avoid some potential discrimination. I mean Puerto Rico is part of the USA and the community is bigger and stronger in USA mainland than Colombia community. Especially, in the arts. So, I don’t think he was trying not to be discriminated but trying to abuse of a more established community looking for their help and connections. Apart of playing a lot of Italians (some are saying he also falsely claimed to have Italian heritage. I haven’t seen proof of that!) and French, ha has played a lot of Puerto Ricans! And there is nothing wrongwith that! Good for him! But yeah, he is a Colombian who usually gets roles designed for Italians and Puerto Ricans. There are a lot of Italians and Puerto Ricans working in Hollywood so usually it’s the other way! They frequently are the ones playing Latinos from other countries. Or at least that was very common in Hollywood. So I suspect, he wasn’t lying or was told to lie to pass as a white man but to “pass” as another Latino community that just had more connections in Hollywood. It wasn’t about racism (of course, Puerto Ricans are discriminated, too!) but about abusing another community that he or whoever told him to lie, saw as more visible and established.

Seriously, why he does this? He has played white characters for years! He even played a historical figure like Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and before it was cool to cast POC in real life historical white figures! He was cast as a white European man without the intention of made a statement or anything. It was just he was considered the best man for the role Then he goes for Al Pacino!!! The mythical “Scarface”!!! Pacino played Carlito in Brian DePalma film as a “modern” response to their own 1970s classical film. They were referring to their own work but this time it was about redemption and paying for old errors. Why they would cast someone else in the main role? If Leguizamo could play Italians, why Pacino couldn’t play Latinos? They both look the parts. www.insider.com/john-leguizamo-white-actors-latino-roles-gwyneth-paltrow-ski-accidents-2023-3Again, I don’t think it helps. It’s easy to see he didn’t suffered the discrimination he claims he suffered. Maybe a few or a lot of idiots told him stupid things but he has a very diverse career with him playing all kind of characters. He didn’t lost roles for being Latino nor has been relegated to certain kind of characters (like a lot of Latino actors frequently were and are) so why not being sincere if he wants to help others? He is just causing division with his lies.

I just thought: What would think about representation someone like Luis Guzman, a Latino actor actually a real Puerto Rican, around the same age than Leguizamo but with a much darker skin tone and yep, he isn’t obsessed with victimhood at all! He received a lot of flak for playing Gómez in Wednesday (a character that has been played by Latino actors before but by “sexy” fair skinned Latinos like Raul Julia and Oscar Issac) but again, he doesn’t feel the victim, www.laweekly.com/the-gothfather-luis-guzman-talks-playing-gomez-addams-and-career-journey-qa/And no way, someone like Leguizamo suffered more discrimination than someone like Guzman!

Probably I should stop reading his opinions. The guy is bonkers! Apparently white actors “stole” his roles so he decided to “stole” their white characters. That’s why he played Italians! So he could or couldn’t find roles in Hollywood?! Why it was so difficult to get those Latino characters but somehow not the white ones? Also Charles Heston?! That was in 1958. He hasn’t even born! He was “revenging” something that happened when he obviously hasn’t have a career in Hollywood! Here he is criticizing Bruno Mars for not using his real name and claims producers said to him to change his ACTUALLY kinda Italian sounding name for an Italian one (it’s actually Basque so it’s Hispanic but kinda odd. And remember he supposedly claimed or believed to be Italian early in his career and, if not true, it seems a lot of people, including me until a few hours ago, actually believed it was an Italian name) At the end of the paragraph he claims he refused to pose as another person but he did! I’m not sure about the Italian heritage part that people are claiming he said he had but his father publicly outed him as a liar for falsely claiming that his father was Puerto Rican! So bizarre! elpais.com/icon/2023-04-11/john-leguizamo-el-latino-incomodo-de-hollywood-hacer-de-italiano-fue-mi-venganza-me-roban-papeles-pues-los-robo-yo-tambien.htmlAnyway, poor guy! I don’t know what he wants to achieve! There are now a lot of right wing racists but also “progressive” racists attacking him on Twitter because he claimed Latinos built America. Each group/tribe is sure it wasn’t Latinos but white/black people who each singlehanded built the whole country. So yeah, pure division and sectarianism and he is feeding it, too. (And Latinos are angry at him for using the term “Latinx”!)
