“Think … and be kind” ^ this While some aspects are complex (the recent history in the area, in Gaza), the atrocities of the past week including the attacks by terrorists … face to face, on the ground, on civilians just living their lives, celebrating art and music, children, toddlers, infants - murder, rape and assault, taking civilians hostage, slaughtering civilians who just happened to be in harm’s way … there is just no way to justify that. Rinder spoke so well, in such a difficult time.

He is a liberal Jew so it should be devastating to see the awful reaction by some people in the left. It felt devastating to me and I’m not even Jewish!
Of course, it’s a terrible complex situation! Netanyahu is an extremist who literally incited his followers to kill Yitzhak Rabin! I still can’t believe how things developed after his murder! There was this brief moment of hope and then it just vanished with the death of a single man!
He is literally a villain and clearly a weak leader because how it’s possible this happened under his supposedly “strong” government? But Hamas is even worse! Of course, Palestines in Gaza are the main victims in the conflict but a good part of their suffering it’s because Hamas! They are terrorist and they always were! They have always been clear that their main purpose is the total destruction of Israel and the killing of all Jews. It’s shocking that some westerners defended them!

It’s the people who will and are suffering terribly. Hamas should not have done what they did and Israel should not be involved in this current retribution campaign, nor should they have been harassing the Palestinians and shoving them around for decades. Both sides are to blame but ultimately the people are the ones who bear the brunt of this conflict. It’s a horrible, shameful mess and I can only hope it doesn’t escalate too badly, although I fear that’s a false hope. I’ve felt sick for days. 🙁

I’ve felt sick for days. 🙁 My heart dropped with the news of the war on Ukraine but, seeing this unfold has left me feeling literally sick all week now. I'm having to avoid the news completely because it's utterly inhumane. The innocent civilians on both sides are suffering at the hands of their respective villains (as sgev1977 so aptly put it).

This is a fantastic piece, www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/10/israeli-government-response-hamas-attack-gaza-9-11-lessons/675622/EDITED I am just hearing a CBS journalist justifying Hamas telling people not to move from their houses after they have been multiple times warned by Israel government to do it saying they just know Israel is bluffing! *facepalm* I really doubt they are tactical thinkers AND, it’s difficult to admit it by some in the West but they totally use human shields! They always have! Even if that’s the case and they doubt Israel will enter Gaza it’s, at least, irresponsible to tell your citizens to stay and die in their homes! (That was also what the Egypt government told them, by the way!)

Sorry but I just read a wonderful article that probably explain the sad situation better than anything until today IMHO,
He is an Historian so it’s not a simple “culture wars” opinion piece like the title suggests but a real historical analysis of a very ahistorical ideology.
He mentions the shameful letter by actors like Tilda Swinton and Steve Coogan. That and the American versión signed by Mark Ruffalo and Jessica Chastain were extremely problematic to me for the reasons he mentions: they totally ignored the sadistic death and kidnapping of Jewish people! They just “forgot” to condemn Hamas! That was the “event” that caused the attack to Gaza, you know! It was extremely disappointing! There is another letter that didn’t received too much attention signed by Rob Rinder, the great David Oyelowo and Stephen Fry (Edited: AND Bradley Cooper! He probably was the biggest name there! Edited 2: And Chris Rock! I think, I only first remembered the British ones!) that did the right thing and *DID* condemned the massacre and the kidnappings!
I usually don’t care too much about what celebrities think not judge them very hard about their political views when I don’t agree with them but this time, it was horrible! TBH it reminds me a little to when I watched my Fritz Lang’s silent films BluRay box set, goggled the film titles to read more about them and accidentally discovered who become a Nazi sympathizer and who did the right, unpopular and difficult thing (also who died in the camps).

Great article. Comprehensive, difficult, and factual. What a horrible mess, and neither side of “leadership” is doing the right thing, with innocent civilians the losers and creating more hatred and thirst for revenge. 😔
