We are wending our way through The Great series. We're about halfway through it.
Sometimes it's hilarious, sometimes it's very difficult to understand what's going on, sometimes it's horrendously bad.
The cast is first rate - I really like the two leads, Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult!! I didn't know until today that Nicholas Hoult played "the boy" in the Hugh Grant's "About a Boy"! I did know that he was in The Current War with BC, though.
He's incredibly charming and has great chemistry with Fanning.
All the supporting cast is wonderful too!
It's a farcical play on history (and it makes no bones about it) so I don't mind when they take GREAT liberties with facts and only loosely follow what actually happened.
The writing is clever and the pace is fast and there are always several "plots" running in each episode, so there's usually something to pique your interest
But... it can be shockingly brutal (in a very non-funny way!) and Dan has found some episodes too sickening for his tastes (I'm a bit more forgiving of the violence than he is, but there have been some scenes that even turn my stomach).
And occasionally it can be flat, boring and repetitive.
The costumes!!! They are sumptuous!
And the locations and Cinematography!!! Just devine!
Although we have struggled with it sometimes, overall it still is worth the struggle.
When it's good, it is VERY good!

I watched it and loved it. It was very funny. The production, costumes, writing, acting all wonderful. I don't know why it wasn't talked more by critics. It was as if it didn't exist. The first season was reviewed in RT by 88 (S1), then 35 (S2) and only 18 (S3) critics. Same on Metacritic. I don't understand it. The last season was deservely nominated for lots of Emmy though. A pity they canceled it. The creator and writer Tony McNamara had planned 6 seasons. Apparently it was planned from the start that Peter was going to die because The Great was Catharine, not him although Nicholas Hoult said that it was a surprise for him when he learned that his character was going to die in S3. But, I guess it was very expensive, I doubt many people watched it and the death of some characters was a shock. Nicholas Hoult and Elle Faning were both excellent.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Czj7Pt2uSSF This year I read some critics praising Emma Stone so much because how daring her acting was because of the nudity and sex scenes (to me there were very brief scenes, sometimes one after the other just for comical effects) and I think Elle Fanning was much more daring and she was just 22 yo in S1 while Emma is already 35. Also one is a film and the other a tv show with 30 episodes.

Glad to see there's another enthusiast out there for this show!
I was disappointed when I heard it had been canceled.
But I guess not enough people found it.
I only watched it because my sister recommended it.
I didn't know Peter dies (we're not that far along yet) but it only makes sense because of history (and even a farce can't stretch the boundaries too much!).
I just adore Elle Fanning's performance! She's luminous.

No problem! I don't know too much Russian history but I do know that Peter died very shortly after he abdicated (I think he only lasted about a month).
What I have yet to look forward to is just how they will present his death. It is still a mystery with some pretty bizarre theories out there, so there's plenty of ways the plot of this series could go!
So nothing really spoiled. 🙂
When I read up about Peter it seems he wasn't the repressive person at all that he is portrayed in the series. He actually was quite progressive in some areas - even more progressive than Catherine in fact. But that's history - not an entertainment series! Lol!

Grrr! 🤬😡
I'm sooooo mad!
Prime Canada has some type of problem with season 3 of The Great!
They let you see that there are episodes BUT when you click on them they say the are "unavailable" in our region!
I did check and Amazon.ca has it on DVD but it's over $45 CDN! Just for the one season!
Really pissed off right now! WTF!
