I watched the first series of Poldark, and I think I watched the first couple of the second series. It had lost me before that, though, really. I wasn't ever terribly taken with it, and I didn't actually like the main casting much at all, even though I'd really liked AT in "Being Human".
I think the problem for me was that I read the books years ago and still had a pretty clear impression of Ross and Demelza and their relationship. And while I didn't dislike AT as Ross Poldark so much, I did actively dislike Demelza and I did dislike the complete absence of chemistry between them. I remember the first book as being really good (the later ones not so much) and I'd had great hopes for the series. But it was too much of a disappointment in practice and just didn't work for me. It was a shame, because I'd wanted to like it.
But re "Being Human", there was a lot of angst around the change of cast after AT upped and left for The Hobbit. And I had just the same misgivings about the change of cast as anyone else, but I made myself give it a chance and, oddly enough, ended up rather preferring the second cast. The first episode was a little confusing in some respects, but there was some really excellent character development over the first few of those episodes after the change and the vampire "Hal", as played by Damien Molony, was a fantastic character! Damien Molony isn't as traditionally good looking as Aidan Turner, but he's a more charismatic actor and the character he played was more dangerous. There are incredibly few series that I've repeat watched at all, but I did rewatch "Being Human" and it was the second cast episodes that I rewatched rather than the first. It surprised me, and I was terribly disappointed when it got cancelled in the end. If anyone is inclined, I'd absolutely recommend giving the second cast the benefit of any doubt. And this has so reminded me how much I did like it, that I think I might just go and watch it again myself.
Coincidentally, I noticed that Damien Molony happens to be in "The Current War" now too.
